Seems like some builds of 10.2 would have leaked if it were nearing GM status for a release at WWDC. AFter all Apple does have to field test such an important OS X update, don't they?
Or could Apple have found some way to beta test 10.2 without seeding it to developers (I'm assuming that's how all the builds of 10.1 were leaked)?
The sooner the better, but I'm skeptical that Apple could accomplish the amount of beta testing required of 10.2 without leaking any builds besides one or two last year. And for such an important update, major developers would have to be able to test their software with the new version of OS X.
I hate to say this, but I don't think we'll see 10.2 until MWSF at the earliest. Still, the wait will be worth it
MWSF? I don't think the Mac community could handle waiting that long I suppose you meant MWNY...
The problem is that Apple so far has managed having a very tight hand on leaks. If all devs attending WWDC are seeded with a build of 10.2, then surely leaks will be as common as in the pre-10.1 days... So either it is *very* close final, either it is finished and Apple somehow managed to beta-test it thoroughly without any leaks occuring.
If betas are going out at, or soon after, WWDC, that leaves aboutt 2 full months before MWNY. Sounds about right for the usual beta stages before release.
If its not going to be MWNY in July, then it will be for Apple Expo in Paris in September. It was where MacOS X Public Beta was released too in 2000.
Nonetheless, I would barter on MWNY. However, if its going to be Apple-Expo, I don't care... I just want an update that is SO kickass that it will make what we are using today look like a 1998 build
I want 10.2 (or 10.5, whatever it will be called) to make my iBook feel like I actually spent a ton of money on something that is worth it. Otherwise, I swear, this book is going to be sold and I'm getting myself a PC and, eventually, get a Mac when (if) the situation gets better in a few years.
I think we'll see the real deal at WWDC, not just a demo. Or perhaps a demo with a June 1 release date. MWNY is too late if Apple has any designs at all on the academic buying season.

Not a chance, a much more likely scenario is a developer release at WWDC with the final thing going on sale at MWNY. I can't imagine the hissy fits that would ensue if Apple released a major update to the OS that would likely break all sorts of applications and drivers without any advance warning to most of its developers. A release in July is probably cutting it pretty close for some developers, but this should give people time to implement some of the new features they'll be talking about at WWDC in time to show off at the expo.

Mac OS X 10.0 wasn't released at an Expo - only the release date was announced.

A) Who said the developers aren't getting advance warning? If anyone has up-to-date builds of everything Apple has, it's companies like Adobe and Microsoft. In fact, Microsoft has announced a large update to Office v.X, to be released around June 1 (which includes anti-aliased text, which is not currently supported by Carbon AFAIK). Developers are very aware of what's going on.
Who said 10.2 would "break" anything at all? Why does it have to? I don't think they're going to take away existing API functionality, only fix bugs and add to the APIs...backwards compatibility is a no-brainer.
As for the others' comments on 10.5, I assume you are saying 10.2 will not be released and instead 10.5 will be the next big one...to which I say, .1 increase every 8-12 months in order to make the OS X brand last a few years. OS X 11.0 is not going to happen. OS XI will - in 2008.
