Help! Newbie, the iMac and sleep!

Hi all,

Yes, I'm new to Mac and am having problems with sleep (the computer function, not my lack of due to extensive playing!).

I was playing around with having classic fire up on login, to ensure that when I scan it will work immediately instead of having to fire up classic manually. I then set Classic to never sleep when idle.

A lttle while later I found that I couldn't put the iMac to sleep from the apple manu. It would power down, but then after a few moments fire up again.

aha, I think, the never sleep bit of the classic. reset it to 60 minutes on both users, but still I can't get it to sleep.

But this morning I find that the iMac is asleep and won't wake up!!!!! WTF is going on??? I sold the idea of the iMac to my wife on the basis it was much more stable that our old PC, and this is a tad embarrasing!! I have a 24/7 cable modem - is there a chance I've been attacked in some way?

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers

David

Hey, your problem could be many things. First of all your operating system. As you said the mac is better than your pc, your right , they are. Tell all your friends to. Back to the subject... One thing that could be hindering your sleep problem is that the operating system could not be installed right, a extention or file that was needed wasn't installed. Also you could have a hardware problem. I have a 600Mhz G3 iMac which wou;dn't start back up from sleep, Found out it was the video card, sometimes one little glitch will bring your computer to a halt, I'ts even worse with PC's.(my opion). Also try calling apple support which is (1-800-aplcare) or <a href="http://www.apple.com/support"; target="_blank">www.apple.com/support</a> and see what they have to say about it. Otherwize call the reseller that you bought your computer from. If your computer is still under warrenty, your safe, dont worry to much.

    Anything else??

(You have questions/ I have answers)

Exactly what answers do you have, Master of the Mac? Patently incorrect advice. The OS might not have a file or extension installed? What? How likely is this to happen? He's running OS X, so no extensions to worry about and a 'file won't go missing randomly.

(sorry, Master's attitude has been annoying me since he got here. Just had to vent...)

I'll try to help tomorrow when I'm not so sleepy...

    Hi, and Welcome!

First, I would try to put her to sleep with classic shut down. Also, I would reset Classic to go to sleep in 5 minutes. It won't affect anything; just if you haven't used classic for a while, it will take a couple of extra seconds to get it's butt in gear.

If these don't work, take it back to the store where you bought it and tell them to fix it (it *is* under warrenty, right?). And I would be shocked if the above don't fix it.

    Good luck.

Hmmmmm.... Sounds like a former Radio Shack employee to me -- which isn't exactly what I would call a "good reference" for Macintosh support. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

I've seen that before in a completely different scenario, (which I'll get to shortly) but I don't think it's directly related to keeping Classic awake. I keep Classic awake too, and I just now manually put my computer to sleep successfully. (Interesting side note: I don't let my computer sleep at all normally, and when I tested it out, I observed that putting it to sleep also appears to shut down the ethernet adapter, because the light went dark on my hub. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> )

Now, as for where I've seen the problem before, it was on the G4 I use at work... which runs MacOS 9 the vast majority of the time, for file sharing purposes. Ergo, I wasn't running MacOS X when it happened. If memory serves, I had tracked it down to (ironically) file sharing being turned on, although I didn't bother to debug it beyond that, as I don't have an option to turn it off.

Now, I know from experimenting at home that the MacOS 9 file sharing does not start up by default inside of Classic, so you probably already know if this is related to your particular problem, as you would have had to manually turn it on....

If that's not it, then in the short-term, I'd suggest temporarily shutting down Classic, and testing to see if that eliminates the problem. If it does, then perhaps you do have a third-party extension running inside of Classic that's causing the problem, as Master seems to have suggested. (Now, don't get a swelled head, Master; he ain't tested the theory yet. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> )

I get this problem whether or not classic is running.

i know I'm going to get the problem if I don't hear the kindof slide/clunk noise. If I do hear it it will sleep properly and wake up, if i don't it will sleep and not wake up.

    What is that slide/clunk noise?!?!

I would imagine that's the harddrive spinning down. I think it's about the only mechanical device that makes any noise at all in an iMac. In any other computer, you'd have to include the fan, but that's a constant hum, and often forgotten altogether until it goes silent...

Interesting. You said you have a cable modem, so I would assume that you've already ensured that everything is up-to-date? If so, then the only thought I have left that's vaguely original is: check for accidental bumps of the mouse, maybe? (Just kidding... well, half kidding. The only time I've been able to recreate your problem, that's what it turned out to be. )

Other then that, all that's really left is to follow-up on Master's hardware suggestions, and check with Apple Support. After all; as torifile said, there's not a whole lot you can do to screw up a MacOS X installation, unless you install something that messes around with stuff that it's not supposed to, and obviously most reputable software vendors would avoid that.

The inability to put the iMac to sleep could be software related, but the fact that you cannot WAKE the computer suggests a hardware problem. I would take the computer back to where you bought it and have them fix it under warranty.

Before taking it in, it wouldn't hurt to verify that everything is plugged in properly, especially the USB connections. If all looks well on the back of the iMac, then take it in for repairs.

PS: I don't know where this "master of the Mac" get's his ideas, but please ignore his babble. OS X doesn't use extensions, and on a new computer the OS isn't going to have a randomly missing file, that's utter stupidity. Furthermore, iMac's do not have video cards, they have a video chipset that is soldered onto the motherboard. "Master" appears to be a master of anything but Macs.

I have a similar problem and never solved it, but I'll try all the tips you guys suggested. But wasn't there a problem with peripherals and sleep mode (speakers maybe)? I can't quite recall the issue and I stopped doing my research. Now I just spin down the hard drive and turn off the LCD.

    Hi,

just to let you know, my problem appears to have disappeared now that I've disconnected my firewire cable attached to my camcorder. Even though the camcorder was off, it seems to have affected sleep.

Could be coincidence, but I don't think so......
