Steve Jobs himself called my cell-phone and BEGGED me to become a member and to show up to the keynote. He promised me there would be a G6 2U rackmountable server with a 4.2Ghz chip, 1Ghz bus speed and standard 3GB of RAM for $1,199 and that they are releasing 10.6 with a 450% speed increase within the finder across the board.

(can you TELL I'm talking out my a$$ here...?)

It looks like attendance is probably a lot lower than they expected. They are trying to woo devs into shelling out the $$$ just to hear the same ole BS, watch the same dog and pony show, and not get any real insight into where Apple is *going* with the OS.

And all for the amazing, low internet special price of $1595.00!!

But wait! There's more! If you register in the next 9 minutes you will get a

    <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2002/apr/15wwdc.html"; target="_blank">Keynote with Steve Jobs!!!!</a>

    <a href="http://developer.apple.com/designawards/"; target="_blank">Apple Design Awards!!!!</a>

    <a href="http://developer.apple.com/wwdc2002/updates.html#labslounges"; target="_blank">A free Lab AND a free Lounge!!!</a>

    <a href="http://developer.apple.com/students/wwdc/mixerform.html"; target="_blank">Visit Student Event Mixer!!!</a>

    and much, much more.

But remeber you must register in the next 9 minutes to receive this Apple WWDC Special.

And if you are one of the next 100 subscribers you will get an unprecedented SNEAK PEAK at MacOS "Jaguar"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    foamy,

You have nicely pointed out some of the reasons I (and a lot others) are not going this year. A bad a economy with no real good information coming out of Apple is going to put a serious dent in the partying at the developer conference this year.

The article refered above has this interesting quote...

[quote] "We're going to be doing some things at the core level of the operating system that have never been done on any platform before," Kerris said. "Allowing this kind of capability to be used by all sorts of applications, we can only imagine what's going to happen over the next year as developers start to tap into the power of the things that they'll see in this update."

    <hr></blockquote>

I wonder if this means 64-bit support in the OS.

My impression from the MacCentral article is that the stuff they're talking about is mostly under-the-hood. That means of course, that you won't necessarily see anything different about it at first, at least not until apps and the GUI take advantage of whatever it might be. That also means that we will once again be flooded with disillusioned users who expected it to wash the dishes for them.

In some ways, I thin Apple is surrounded by these catch 22s. On one hand, if they add features to the GUI, it can be decried as eye candy. On the other, if they don't make their work outwardly visible to users, they are blamed for their apparent lack of progress. The answer of course is to do both but I honestly think a lot of people on Mac message boards set themselves up for a big fall.

64-bit support has been done before. Just not in MacOS.

Kerris is probably talking about things that have never been done in an OS before, period, and given the sorts of things that Apple has already put in (CoreAudio, Quartz) that wouldn't surprise me.

    "Stay tuned."

all i need and i think i'm not the only one is...

a better finder, more options and some more speed across the gui. If there is others goodies like clustering, cups, metadata, quartz to GPU, video conferencing ... mmmh... i'll take them all

... maybe the *thing* is a central metadata sql database for the file system after all (before longhorn ???)

Damn that Andrew Welch. His *one* little comment on the MacNN board got me all excited.

PS: Don't even ask what I was doing on MacNN's baords.

    Maybe they put in CoreVideo?

Hm, right now I could not care less what might go into the kernel or not, if it is not another instance of iPhoto-resource-hog that's moved into the kernel, for God's sake!

But I'd pretty much appreciate a clean solution for file permission consistency in X.

This rats nest of conflicting settings between BSD, NetInfo and MacOS and HFS+ is driving me nuts right now.

Hopefully they'll fix those patched up piles of softcode called Finder asap and garnish it with some new technology that brings some Oohs and Aahhs. Whatever this may be with regard to usefulness. Main goal must be ironing out the big flaws. And good God, there are plenty.

Can someone say GPU back on track?

What would you say if it were a CoreJournallingFileSystem ? Hey, THAT would be cool!

I just hope they announce the release date and that it's before July. Even early June would mark the eight month point in its development. Given what 10.1 accomplished in six months, I see no reason to delay such a major release - especially if it's relatively stable. And especially if the only reason to delay is the QT MPEG crapola.

Boy you sure don't ask for much, do you?

You will all be amazed for sure. Jaguar is going to blow you all away, it's better in ways that none of you have predicted yet. And yes, it's fast, performance will be a non-issue after Jaguar is released. Let's just say it's related to two words: "Quartz" and "Chipset".

And yes, spring-loaded folders are back, as are a few other sorely missed features from OS 9. But most of the groundbreaking stuff in Jaguar is totally new and different. Prepare to think different, VERY different. So different that many of you will whine about it, but I think most Mac users will be suprisingly stunned at how pleased they are after the initial shock wears off.

OK, I'll bite. Will I need new hardware to see any real improvement in performance?

Junkyard, that sounds great, but I'm with unimacs on this one: I just (as in about 4 days ago) got a new iMac/800/superdrive etc. When you say "chipset", that sounds suspiciously like I will need to buy new hardware in order to take advantage of whatever this is.

Unless somehow my GeForce 2 MX that came with the iMac can handle whatever it is you're talking about.

And I hope performance will be a non-issue with Jaguar... it's definitely an issue with 10.1, even on a brand new 800 MHz G4 iMac. I guess I'll be skeptical until I see OS X running as fast or faster than OS 9 on the same hardware.
