New to Mac & OSX; What is all the fuss about?

Having just bought two iMacs for my home (finally took the Mac plunge 'cause OSX is Unix which runs mainstream apps & games) I have to wonder what all the fuss about Aqua and the Dock are about.

Sure Aqua is pretty, but everyone keeps going about how useful the Dock is. Has no one used Solaris CDE interface before? The "dock" has been there for years.

I think that Apple has become very MS like and and co-opt'ed the work of previous OS developers. Thank god they had the good sense to go open source and base it all on FreeBSD.

Thanks to Apple for putting all those pieces together and producing the first really useful, SECURE, STABLE & EXTENSIBLE desktop OS.

But, to be fair its all been done before. Apple just integrated, it didn't innovate.

Hmmmmm Solaris sucks as a Desktop OS. No one has said the "Dock" is unique or innovative. It's not my favorite either but it's better than Windows Taskbar.

Go read the White Papers and Docs on OSX. You sound like you are speaking more out of Ignorance than experience. Most of us on these boards have hashed out the "benefits" of OSX. Do some searches and learn a little.

OSX has plenty of Innovation once you get beyond "Skin Deep" features. The Midi/Core Audio features alone have no peer in any other OS.

Actually most people on these boards hated Aqua and the dock at first. Now people just accept it. But I don't see people talking about how incredibly great it is. Have you been reading Apple's website or something?

I agree to a point. Was it not Apple engineers who developed NeXT, the system on which X is based? NeXT was far ahead of its time when it was alive, and certainly ahead of WinAnything.

Apple not innovative (w.r.t. OS X)... hmmm...

Are you retarded? No offense but I would hardly call OS X a rehashing of what has come before. BeOS is a rehashing. In some respects Linux is a rehashing (albeit from the ground up) of UN*X.

BUT, how many "regular" (i.e. not like me) people actually USE BeOS and Linux (granted it IS getting easier...but....)?

Apple wins innovation if nothing else for attempting to make an idiot-proof operating system that also happens to be Cloud 9 for developers and other power-hungry fiends like yours truly. This is a huge undertaking "bound to fail" by the account of most of the industry at large. How can a kindergardner and a code-junkie survive in the same environment happily and productively?

Besides, even if you start to argue the semantics of "innovative", lets look at the competition's offerings in comparison. Is XP innovative? (Ahem. )

Besides, as for the OS X naysayers, I have certainly seen a lot press praising OS X and knocking XP. Not that the press/media is an intelligent entity capable of rendering anything close to the truth or anything, but even the users themselves are watching their XP update a zillion times a day while viruses continue to pelt their crappy OS that has a striking resemblance to swiss cheese.

The Dock maybe small change in retrospect, but I seem to remember a room full of SmartFriends? @ MacHack truly Ooh-ing and Ahh-ing over the Dock and its really cool behavior. I mean, admit it, practically everyone has been guilty of just winging that Dock back and forth at full magnification (its just that the hackers are watching the Dock in top eat cycles like Grendel. )

Hind sight is 20/20, and even now I hear people yawning about the new iMac design. But mark my words, providing Apple's Suited Gorillas don't get them first, we will see similar designs from other PC companies looking to steal the next best thing... I mean, really, how long until someone develops a Dock.app for XP (hell it is probably done already...)?

Gee... a new idea that everyone embraces due to its elegance and sublime nature... That wouldn't be INNOVATION? Would it?

Damn that was fun. Now for my next thread I intend to question the parentage of Jobs and Woz.

I like OSX, I just don't see taking open source FreeBSD and adding a GUI as being particularly innovative. Clever, well thought out, useful are all adjectives that spring to mind. Innovative does not.

X Windows comes from NeXT??? Put down the crack pipe son.

NeXT was another project based upon BSD. Truthfully, I think that OSX is what they wanted NeXT to be. I wanted a NeXT when they came out, but it was too expensive, had no mainstream apps and only a black & white display. Now I am at the point in my life where I can afford to purchase a NeXT computer, except now it has an Apple logo on it. Fine with me.
