Imac G5 hard disk failure??

i have a sightless imac g5 that randomly shuts off about 30 seconds without me being able to log in. although i was able to log ina d surf the net for about 15 minutes once other than that it jsut turns on that shuts off suddenly. the power jsut goes out. a friend of mine said this was a hard disk failure. could it be anyhting else? what should i do?
