C'mon! More details on Jaguar!
I'm not sure how tightly gagged Apple's developers are supposed to be, but I'd sure appreciate it if anyone out there who's now working with a pre-release copy of Jaguar could say more about bug fixes, and about less glitzy but important bits of basic functionality.
Okay... maybe iChat and QuickTime 6 and Rendezvous will be great. But that's not what I'm *eager* for in the next OS X release. What I'm eager for is for some of the many rough edges to be smoothed, for unfinished jobs to be finished. Telling me about iChat is like having a builder tell me about the beautiful new deck he's going to add to my house while I'm still waiting for the kitchen floor to be put down and a few leaky pipes to get fixed.
Overall, does Jaguar feel speedier, more solid, more refined, more finished?
Will the Energy Saver control panel finally have separate AC vs. battery settings?
Will Finder windows and icons stay at the sizes and stay in the places where I put them?
Will Finder windows properly update the information they show without having to close and reopen them, and without me having to click on individual files before I can trust the information being displayed in a list view?
When I copy multiple files on top of existing files, will I finally have a "Replace All" button instead of being forced to click "Replace" dozens of times?
Will we get labels back?
Will we get some sort of file extension manager, since we now have to deal with Unix/Windows-style file extensions?
Will many of the current Java implementation bugs get fixed? I'd rather have a rock-solid JDK 1.3.1 than a buggy new 1.4 if I had to choose between the two.
Has the terrible implementation of iDisk been fixed so that it will function with some reasonable semblance of speed?
Has a *good* option for turning off antialiasing appeared, where the non-antialiased fonts are properly hinted and spaced rather than being mangled with characters staggering back and forth between large gaps and collisions?
Will Apple coax a better version of Internet Explorer out of Microsoft? Or help someone somewhere -- maybe Mozilla -- create a truly solid web browser for OS X?
(Anyone who wishes to interject at this point "Have you tried [insert browser name here]?", who would have to add to their suggestion "Well, as long as you don't need Java/JavaScript/CSS/Plug-in X/etc." -- well, go ahead and make the suggestion if you feel you must, but won't be what I'm hoping for.)

I think people are going to be happy with the speed, and it's definitely looking like a more polished OS. No labels though

At least it's newer than the one in 10.1.4. Hopefully they've fixed a bug that I absolutely need fixed.

Thanks for the info. More reasons to be excited about Jaguar it would seem :cool:
As for doing a new thread... It seemed to me the existing thread was mostly about Apple's Big Announcements rather than the stuff I wanted to know -- with plenty of bitching and moaning about "Whaddya mean Quartz Extreme isn't supported on my Apple IIe?" thrown in for good measure
That said, a "Replace All" button would be nice.
i guess that's why apple is trying to pack pixels tighter on their recent displays - eventually, it'll be standard anti-aliased throughout. but we're still in a transition period, i guess...
