Does anyone know where I can find a list of OS X applications that are AltiVec capable?

    Is SETI really AltiVec optimized? I thought they didn't optimize for anything.

    There's a brief list at <a href="http://www.apple.com/g4/"; target="_blank">Apple's G4 page</a>.

    Don't think that's the only stuff that's optimized. Lots of little apps get AltiVec optimizations also, as Andrew Welch can certainly testify to.

    SETI@Home is not optimized for altivec. They have done no optimzation for any specific hardware.

    And in that SETI demo the G4 faired no better than my G3 at the time. Remember, it was compared to an Intel CPU and not the G3.

    Crandall said a G4 could do a SETI unit in 6 hours. I could do a unit on my 233 MHz iMac in 14 hours if I ran lean.

    really? I thought he used altivec as the reasoning that it was so much faster

    I know that older versions of some Adobe apps such as PhotoShop required a separate plug-in ("AltivecCore") to use AltiVec. Anyone know if this is still the case with version 7, or have they natively embedded this capability into the application? I was poking around in a friend's PhotoShop 7 folder and didn't see this plug-in anywhere.

    Photoshop 7 still requires the AltivecCore, even in OS X. It's not really OS X prepared in a lot of ways--although the splash screen features some cool aqua transparency effects .

    &lt;EDIT&gt;

    You have to manually install it after poking around in the Photoshop 7 install CD--that might be why your friend doesn't have it.
