No, Leopard will NOT install on just any Mac, look at the system requirements.
True dat. My iBook G4 was shut out of the Leopard upgrade, even though it was only three years old at the time.
I'd still take Leopard over Vista any day, but that did frost my cookies some. \
And of course, Snow Leopard is the same thing. Assuming an early/mid-2009 release, there'll be plenty of three-year-old (Power PC) machines that won't be able to run it.
Wasn't one of the big criticisms leveled against Vista the fact that you needed some pretty new PC hardware to run it well, or at all? Then Apple goes and does kinda the same thing?

Did you try to install Leopard, or did you just look at the System Requirements and not install. I often run OS's on older software than their system requirements and usually the results are quite promising. (maybe this is not true of Vista but with XP and OS X I've found a new OS is an improvement even if it is not "supported")

I was told it wouldn't even install on my machine. Perhaps I should've tried anyway, but it's a moot point a year later, now that I have my early '08 MacBook Pro.
Of course, with Snow Leopard, there won't be an option to even try. The Power PC code just won't be there to run.
My guess? Apple's okay with shutting three-year-old hardware out of OS updates, since doing so might accelerate the hardware upgrade cycle some.
Isnt the main reason why Vista is so largely unpopular due to the fact that youre forced into a position you might not want, aka the constant questioning of your actions and the excessive graphical enhancements.
I wouldnt mind using Vista if it werent for those two obvious shit-stamps.
XP did this aswell with the new kiddie theme but atleast you had the option to turn use the old one.

Am I wrong to be cynical here?

LOL, MS should just accept that people will forever call Vista as the failed OS...
Even more so than Windows ME?
:P
