Click the icon, Show Info (File menu), click the icon in the window, paste.
There is a known bug in the Finder, however, where the icon will not properly refresh or may disappear altogether. Simple force quit and relaunch the Finder after changing the icon and everything will be a-okay.
Did you relaunch the Finder after pasting as I suggested?
If that still doesn't work, you can always check in the Terminal to see if there is an existing icon there that refuses to be overwritten. Simply open 'er up, and enter the command ls -al / | grep "Icon". If it shows nothing, then there is clearly no icon set. If it shows something like this:[code]-rw-r--r-- 1 bwsmith admin 42587 May 3 03:46 .VolumeIcon.icns</pre><hr></blockquote>then, yes, there *is* an icon on the drive. However, if it is owned by another user, "root" for example, then you may not be able to change it. If that's the case, open the Terminal again and enter the commands cd / and then rm .VolumeIcon.icns. If prompted for a password, use your admin account one. That will delete the old drive icon file and should allow you to paste on a new one.
Remember, though, that you'll still probably have to relaunch the Finder to properly refresh the icon.
thanks for the info...changed mine to a very pretty iMac icon....love the Hal 9000 icon, but it seems pretty popular....it did make the icon disappear till i restarted....g
not only did my new HD icon paste, but the stupid AOL Instant Messenger icon that i kept fighting with (it kept changing back everytim someone would IM me, and I kept re-pasting it) turned back into the icon i wanted!!! i am so excited! thank you thank you thank you!
yep, thats the AIM version im running. but i used to have the older one (4.5.4**) and it took a different icon no problem. actually, i hate that new AIM icon. it's just butt-ugly IMO. i have a replacement one that just has a yellow running man, instead of the whole ball and aol logo, that i like better. when i restart the computer, i get the running man in my dock. but after i launch the app, it turns back into the one with the ball and aol logo.
btw, i really like the msn messenger icon, and it's much more aqua-esqe! but i only have a couple of buddies that use msn exclusively, so it's not even in my dock.
