iChat will be much more or why a WebCam will be next

Though just another speculation at this point, I found some hints in jaguar that iChat will be much more than just another instant messenger. In fact it seems pretty obvious to me, that the next digital hub appliance from apple will be a WebCam (maybe bluetooth/airport enabled - think apple pro speaker in terms of industrial design) The screenshot shows some content of an iChat related framework in jaguar. First four icons on the right are well known buttons from iChat, whereas the next three ones seem new/not integrated yet. mb-sendsong points to an iTunes integration (I think this will bring up some major record companies). mb-mic and mb-camera are the more interesting ones - this is were quicktime broadcaster/iChat and the cam rumours seeming to perfectly merge.

I've always figured Apple would eventually get around to this, especially since companies like Yahoo have this functionality in their Windows versions of their messengers, but not in the Mac versions. Now, what would really be nice is if iChat would be more than just an AIM client.

The older versions of AIM under OS 9 had voice IM features so no reason to think that Apple would not add them eventually.

Looks cool. I like the idea of iChat, but for me, it has one problem. Since Apple only has 10% of the marketshare or whatever, unless an Windows version is released (unlikely), or someone makes a Windows equivalent, I have no way of chatting to 90% of my mates who i chat to on MSN. Because of this, for me it is a cool idea but entirely useless.

Well, iChat is supposed to be fully compatible with AIM, so there is already a windows version of sorts (not sure if you have to be an AOL member to use it, though).

That would be okay then, as long as the basic text features are supported so that you can still communicate with PC users that would be good. Don't think you have to be an AOL user to use AIM, I used it briefly a while back and have never subscribed to AOL in my life.

If you are right, my worries are instantly solved.

iChat works on the AIM network. Just download the client free for any OS at <a href="http://www.aim.com"; target="_blank">www.aim.com While you can't use MSN, AIM is more popular anyway.

As for the voice stuff, its about time that came back to the mac. And the video stuff with be cool, hopefully with MPEG4 technology .
