Google paying Apple?

I read an article yesterday http://www.computerworld.com/action/...intsrc=hm_list that said that Google pays Mozilla ~$60 million dollars to include Google as the default search engine in Firefox.

How much do you think Google is paying Apple to be the sole search engine on the iPhone? Would Apple ever consider using Live Search http://www.techflash.com/Microsoft_L...36599384.html? How much would it cost MS and would they pay it?

Apple seem to take a mix of money and their own interests to push forward certain features. They wouldn't use Microsoft's search because they are more of a rival than a partner. Same reason for Google maps and not the Microsoft one on the iphone.

It is quite blatant in some cases. On the UK itunes store, Apple have put some O2 application offering with a 5/5 popularity rating. The customer reviews say it's absolutely terrible and has something like 2/5 for a review but Apple have it at the top of the chart because O2 is the exclusive network carrier in the UK for the iphone.

Google may not need to pay Apple as Google can give them stuff in return. Partnerships usually have two-way deals.

Google has long paid Apple and Mozilla a portion of ad revenue from search results found using the search bar. This is the case for Safari on Mac and Windows and I assume for iPhone as well. I am not sure if MS does anything similar, but since they are still the dominant browser on the desktop, I am not sure it would make sense, at least in that space. Would MS want Apple to make Live search an option or even the default in Safari on the iPhone? Maybe. When Google started paying Apple and Mozilla, they didn't have Chrome and so were not competitors in any real way. Now with Chrome, I suppose they are, search is still their primary business (and associated ads) but they probably still find it worthwhile to pay to play. MS competes with Apple and Mozilla, so I am not sure they want to help line their pockets. I have no idea, maybe they already pay for desktop searches the way Google does.

I don't know, maybe the fourth leg in the chair for Apple is something like this... but with OS X obvi

Then again, all they'd have to do is make a touch screen LCD that connects to your phone and make people buy a tethering plan

Last time I looked in 'Settings' on my iPhone under 'Safari' there seems to be a choice between Google or Yahoo under 'Search Engine'.
