if you buy any new mobile phone anywhere in the world without a SIM card, this is the price you'll pay !! But in the mobile phone market, everything is subsidised !!! Hence lower prices !! A brand Nokia N96 without a SIM contract goes for about ?900 !!

And once more , it's a story coming from MacNN .. Those guys are really lame !!! really can't be bothered to explain anything !!!

I think Americans are getting screwed!

Italians are getting screwed with a iphone data plan of only 250 MB per month.

Ideally the phones should be ?500 and be network unlocked, however that's not the case. This is a case where the french are taking their anti competition laws a bit too far. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy an iphone. If you don't like the network locked situation then buy a different phone. There is competition...

No they're not. they are carrier free SIM-unlocked phones. You can buy them without a SIM card, insert another card and no problem whatsoever. No need to go through unlocking. Some things won't work (visual voice mail) but most will. And it's apple guaranteed!

You CANNOT equate PAYG iphones = unlocked iphones.

Wow, that doesn't seem like a great deal.

New Zealand has had contract free iPhones since day one of release here. The most expensive one is $1129(NZ) which works out on the currency conversion at the time to be $659(US). Half the cost of the French one.

If you want a contract free iPhone then come to New Zealand.
