Jaguar Free? This rumor says so!
Anyone know the reliability of macosxrumors.com? They claim to have sources within Apple who say that Jaguar will be 10.2, and that the update will be offered in exactly the same way as 10.1 was.
I want to believe, but I'm not familiar with this site's track record. Anyone care to comment?

Apple also wants EVERYONE to enjoy the improved speed and usability of Jaguar so MOST EVERYONE will remain loyal mac users.
Apple also wants EVERYONE running Jaguar so they don't have to offer support for EVERYONE running multiple versions of OS X.
Free is good. Apple doesn't really need to money from OS sales. The above benifits are much tastier. Apple is smart.
Like I've been saying all along. Apple wants EVERYONE to be running Jaguar so developers will have a reason to write apps that use Jaguar's new features.

I just can't see Apple passing up the money they'd make by charging for an upgrade in this economy. The stockholders would crucify them.
I do think they'll have two-tier pricing to encourage upgrades though, with current owners being able to upgrade for some amount less than $129. If I had to guess it'd be $79 which is around what they sell the educational version for.
Do you think a company that charges $400 for a 512mb upgrade is going to give anything for free. Even if 10.0 and 10.1 were only public betas. Yes they were, you can't tell me OSX was designed to run that slow. Resizing my browser window feels like I'm rendering a 20gig movie.

OS X 10.0 and 10.1 were NOT public betas! What hardware are you running 10.1 on? OS X 10.1.5 runs perfectly fast on my iBook 500MHz with 384MB of RAM.

I'm running MacOS X an a B/W G3 400MHz/512MB, and "FAST" is definitely NOT the word I would choose.
It's not as sluggish as 10.0 but still slow (during Window manipulation)...
more over, it'a a memory hog: 512MB and still swapping.
How is it the "right" thing to do?

Apple needs money. Things of it as altruism in motion.

Because you know Apple cares all about you.

Apple has money. They charge too much for their hardware, so I'm not worried about them not having enough money.
I believe that like 10.1 there will be a charge but it will probably be more like "if you currently own 10 then the upgrade will be $29.99 other wise it will be 129.99. apple will gladly give out 10.2 but as in 10.1 there will be more than 100Mb of upgrades and they will need to realease a cd. Looking back if you remember the 9.1 update, it was almost 150Mb download. Apple learns from its mistakes and that size of an public update caused huge problems. Apple will need to use CDs and package it. this costs money and they will have to charge a minimal fee for the distrabution. I think it is more than likely that they will not reem current OS X users simply because they are working through a difficult spot. it is not easy to release such a significant change to an os and not scare off cusomers. they have been very good about making this as painless as posible and I think it will be in their best intrest to continue that trend.
If Jaguar is not a free upgrade then you're looking at a minimal fee for it + probably "shipping cost" for a cdrom.
Apple want to get their hardware in everyones face, an excellent software package is all part of the sell, and if this means minimal cost to its established user base then it can only boost confidence in people looking to make the switch or those who are about to make their first "computer" purchase.
Think about it,you go to the computer store and see a wintel machine with sh*t loads of free software (abeit some pretty useless stuff thown in), then check out the Macs - where's all that free software I was gonna get with the PC? ... MORE SELLS
Is it too much to ask to have a maximise button that actually works, and uses the entire available space wthout sitting behind the dock????
The only app I've used that doesn't seem to do this, is OmniWeb.
Any ideas?

Cocoa app!
'nother reason why cocoa rules over carbon.
Devs are lazy. Cocoa allows devs to be lazy and still get apps to behave correctly.
yep real lazy.

True, that. But no one is buying their hardware right now so...
I'm not asking people to switch to Microsoft. I just want some basic functionality.

All i want is a proper maximise button. Try maximise on a Microsoft box if you dare, and you'll instantly see what I mean.

My god, you're right! Having a single window take over my *entire screen*, with *inches* of wasted space around the actual content is *exactly* what I was looking for! Thanks!

You mean like intelligent actions instead of brain dead knee jerk overkill?
I *hate* maximize on Windows. Just because the original UI designers were too freakin' lazy to code up something worth using, everything thinks it's just The Way Things Are(tm). Bollocks.
