How much CAN the DOCK do?

Posted:
in macOS edited January 2014
We have seen that the dock can be on all sides of the screen, the three minimization effects,(to get these you need tinkertool or UNIX ability) the regular bounce, the annoying attention bounce, and now (with the help of a MacHack) somersault!

\\

What else can the dock do to icons? What other features are there? Can is make the icons spin, make it looks like it is building momentum and then drop it back down?

What else is there? Thankee

how about a long click or command click on a dock icon to bring up that apps menu. And you can then hold Alt to change the quit option to a Force Quit option for those stubborn, unresponsive Apps. Saves opening the force quit window and removes the chance of forcing the wrong app closed..... and you must get <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=11295&db=mac"; target="_blank">Transparent Dock .

The somersault thing is a hack which adds a little bit of pizzazz to dock icons that jump up when they need your attention. When the icon leaps up, it performs a somersault, then comes back down. I saw an animation of it somewhere, but damned if I can find the link or the page again (Google was of no help there).

The other great feature of the dock (which I feel is under-utilized in most apps) is the ability to modify it's appearance or status...Mail app shows number of new emails, Toast superimposes a "status-Bar" of the current burn, there's a wealth of possibilities to utilize this "Live" updating of the dock icon. I hope developers start to push the envelope of what dock icons can do to be more useful in visualizing information.

How can i make my dock icons preform this somersault?! Is it a simple install or does it require complex terminal hacking?

I think it's cool being able to watch movies in the dock. BTW, WTF is that little app/hack that keeps certain apps from bouncing? I REALLY want to make MSN stop bouncing every time someone sends me a message...

I just replaced the Dock with Workstrip. It's basically the Dock, pop-up folders and dragthing in one, plus it adds some some nifty features. Apple should have a good look at this. If you're a designer and need to browse through images/sounds/movies very quickly, this can't be beat!!!

Also, it has virtual desktops built-in

    Images can be seen here:

To make the dock icons stop bouncing there are several things you can do. One is look on either download.com or version tracker for an app called dock-detox.

i want to see a hack that will make various dock icons come alive and start fighting.

Take the MSN Messenger dude and the Finder or something... after a while, when you aint doing nothing, they struggle themselves out of the dock and start fighting till one survives.

Macanoid, that workstrip is awesome. Could be nicer theme, but the functionality looks exactly what the dock should be.

As I remember, it was a small program that you could install from a CD-ROM (MacHack 2002 CD-ROM?). Aside from that, I don't know anything else about it.
