MacBook Hard Drive Failure

Hey Gang,

I have a 2007 MacBook that is about 3 weeks out of warranty. My hard drive failed. I took it to the apple store and they were happy enough to replace the drive, but they wanted my drive (and my data) in return. Sadly, we didn't have a back up. They also suggested I call Drive Savers.

Drive savers wants somewhere between $500-$2500 for recovery. Oy! I can't afford that. (And I thought a Time Capsule was expensive!)

Has anyone ever had any luck with Apple stepping up to the plate with something like data recovery (I know that it isn't covered in the warranty, but it seems silly that a computer that is 55 weeks old should have a catastrophic failure). And failing that, does anyone know of a less expensive recovery service than DriveSavers? (Are there any tech-type folks out there who think they can do the job? I'd be happy to hire you, if you can recover the data)

Thanks
