New 17" MacBook Pro and iMacs delayed for Snow Leopard release, February 24th?

Apple delayed the shipping date of the new 17" MacBook Pro to 19th February, one week today as I write this:

That gives a a delivery date, five days later, on *Tuesday* 24th February. Apple also signalled new iMacs are imminent two weeks ago and in particular that existing reseller orders for 24" iMacs may not be honoured:

I suspect that this indicates that the 24" production line has been switched to producing an entirely new model, probably the expected quad-core with a new cooling arrangement, while a version of the 20" iMac will continue much as it is now.

The most recent developer release of Snow Leopard appeared to approaching final as it asked developers to concentrate of third party application compatibility.

Then there was the Apple director's slide showing a first quarter release of Snow Leopard:

Given that releasing a paid-for OS revision shortly after shipping flagship Mac models either involves bad-publicity or an expensive 'up-to-date program', or both, we can understand why Apple may well have delayed the shipping the new 17" MacBook Pro, and chosen to coincide the release of the new iMacs with Snow Leopard which is expected to lever significant speed bumps over the previous generation iMacs.



My money is on an Apple event announced on Tuesday 17th February to be held Tuesday 24th to launch Snow Leopard and the new iMacs. There could be an advance announcement for i7 Mac Pros and a 'one more thing' NetBook which will be much happier running the slim-line Snow Leopard than the current 10.5.x. Expect Apple Cinema TVs and new iPhone/Touch's in the Summer. I expect this to be an exciting year for Apple, and me.

    thoughts? well, my birthday is on the 27th... and i'm waiting for new iMacs since september.

    1. Snow Leopard is months away. Don't hold your breath!

    2. We all expect new iMacs any time now, but if Apple announces a special event, don't expect several major updates at once. The best thing to hope for: one major update and a couple of less important product announcements/updates.

    If there is a special event then I think it will be to show off the new Mac mini and cinema displays. The iMac will make an appearance so we can see how "nice" it pairs up with the displays. I do not expect the Mac Pro to be there, but it would be nice if Apple introduced new graphics cards for the Mac Pro.

    No way Snow Leopard is coming by the end of February - someone would have spilled the beans by now. They always do...



    I do think Apple will probably have an event sometime between now and the end of March to introduce new iMacs and <wishful thinking> a new Mini </wishful thinking>. It's kinda hard to tell right now because Apple's most recent advances have been made to push their notebook line. The Mac Pro probably won't see any update until WWDC. Your average Joe Consumer isn't going to drop $2700 + on a workstation-class tower in the middle of a recession. I think the one big update a year with a processor bump somewhere in between is a pretty good update cycle for the Mac Pro.



    I'd like to see them introduce and advertise the new Mac Mini. I know Apple is doing fairly well given the current economic climate, but I think if they dropped the current mini down to $499 with a processor bump and introduced a new mini from $599 and up, it might help them swing in a few more customers. They've kept the white plastic MacBook around for awhile, so it's certainly not outside of reality for them to try this...

    Sorry, I wasn't clear. What I meant is that it's highly unlikely for an Average Joe to buy a Mac Pro in the first place because it's way more than they need and the bad economy adds another reason why Joe isn't going to be getting a Pro. Because of this, I think Apple will hold any updates on the Pro until WWDC, since that is the audience that is more in the market for that computer than Joe.



    My prediction on 10.6 though - Apple intro's the new MP at WWDC, alongside a final preview of Snow Leopard and they'll ship the new OS in October.

    Wow, this would be sweet but I am not getting my hopes up. Something is wrong at Apple right now. By wrong I just mean a bit off the groove, not necessarily bad, just... something's up... Almost like they've got their cans of whoopass ready, they're just taking their a-bit-too-sweet time figuring out which one to open up on the market.

    Wow, that would be amazing. Too agressive for the way Apple is doing things. And there won't be a 20" LED Cinema Display.

    And there shouldn't be either. 20" is too small I believe to make any sort of impact.



    With 24" LCDs available for roughly $260 and IPS 23" available for $299 (Dell) it would appear that Apple's a bit

    stuck with LCD sizes. We may not see a smaller CD until Apple an release a new 30" and maybe a 26".

    Given the rate of display prices falling and demand for screen size increasing rapidly, Apple is going to skip 23", 26", and go for 30" or 32" LED backlit (middle of the year). And for kicks (integrated Apple TV etc) maybe a 40" somewhere towards end of this year (holiday shopping).
