Simple Finder(and other unmentioned Features)

Well, i was looking at the Mac OS X More Features website and noticed somethings:

Simple Finder: I was at the Apple Store today and tried out the Simple Finder, and let me tell you, this was SIMPLE! One window open at a time, no scroll bars, just numbers and arrows and the bottom of the window to show what page you were on (ONLY Icon VIEW) The Admin could not have Simple Finder so I made a new user....

'Nother thing I noticed on the web site:

[quote] New sounds and effects

I did not have time to find them, my maw' had me leave, but i imagined if i searched the help i would have learned how to turn them on....

anything...anything? :confused:

    It's good to see some of the better MacOS 8/9 features finally coming back. It's also good to see that vioceprint passwords are gone (NO, HONESTLY MY VOICE REALLY IS MY PASSWORD! My Mac: Yeah sure buddy thats what they all say. ) I hope we get a barrage of new preference panes to play with too!

    10.1=OS8 10.2=OS9 (By this logic 10.3 is going to rule all! )

    under your logic 10.3 is going to be OS 10, so are you pointing us to an alter dimension's OS where 10.0 was really amazing and fast?

    10.0 = real public beta

    10.1 = consolidation of everything

    10.2 = optimization of consolidated features and some extras. 90% there.

    10.3 = the REAL 10. And if only God will permit, we will even have labels again

    I really doubt you're going to see labels until the filesystem is revamped to support rich metadata, ala BeFS. I have to believe there's a reason Apple hired BeFS' creator.

    Would you rather have a label hack now (Finder uses that pesky Finder data on a file, but Sherlock has to augment another fork for keyword search, etc) or just wait until there's a single clean system for performing these sorts of organization?

    I expect that you'll see the keyword search feature of Copland finally resurface when we get 'labels'.

    Hey! Whatever did happen to the voice passwords? I thought it was rather cool actually.

    Sound effects

    Yeah, they're slowly creeping back in. They're not present nearly to the extent of the soundsets in Classic Mac OS. They're part of the CoreAudio.component now. Here's a list of the what my build has:

    "My Voice is my password."

    I never considered that a real feature. It was more a gimmick than anything. It was not as secure as some claimed it to be because I could access my father's account and he could mine. Our voices aren't even too similar! Anyway, I think it wouldn't be too to integrate into OSX if if someone wanted to write a voice password plugin for Kerberos.

    Simple Finder.

    Yes, it is pathetically, mind-numbingly simple. Think back to the days of "At Ease" and picture that in OSX.

    Yes, you can turn them off in the "Sounds" system prefs pane. There is a checkbox titled "Play user interface sound effects" that toggles these.

    That song is Andrew Gold's Thank You For Being A Friend.

    Yeah, If I remember right, it's from the Golden Girls TV show (with Bea Arthur, Betty White and Estel Getty). You can beat me up for knowing that, I'll allow it.

    Somehow I imagine when 10.3 gets here, there'll be lots of folks saying when 10.5 gets here that's the real 10!

    I say 10.1 was fully functional, 10.2 get'sthe UI to where 9 was, but the OS itself has so many more pieces to it than the UI. That's all OS 9 was, 10 has a fully functional Unix remember. And good development tools. 9 never came close to what 10.0 had in terms of features, but the UI being on par with 9 is long over due...
