Anyone have any good sources on the web for cool apps (binaries) for X11 (Free86, XDarwin)?
I just started playin' with X11 and its kinda cool. I would love to install a web browser and stuff.
Any (OS X friendly) links for a X11 newbie?

I would say to just go to freshmeat.net or sourceforge.net and see what programs you can find and look for compatibility. Also from fink.sourceforge.net (not exactly for newbies, but give it a shot) I'm too tired to think of anything else ... I need some water ... so hot =(

Open OS X Is a site where they compile the X11 programs for you and include a window server...all you have to do is run a standard installer, and it works, simple as that. You do not have to download anything, it just works. Most of the programs cost $30 bucks and if you buy more you get discount
(i have not tried any of their products, but it seems simple enough)
Ok, now I'm ready for a more indepth explanation. X11 is just the windowing system. You will need other libraries to get going. Like GNOME/GTK+, KDE/QT, OpenMotif. There aren't many programs that *just* run in X. You should be able to get mplayer running with just X though. You can get the osx version (not native, version that compiles in OSX and uses X11) from fink.sourceforge.net. It's a movie player that plays most everything up through DivX5, but it's no big on gui though. It's more console-based. (console command brings up just the movie window which uses keyboard commands to help the play) Once you get those other libraries installed you can use lots of more programs. You'll basically be reaching into the linux/unix/bsd basket of programs.

I ran Gnome 1.4 under XDarwin until my 40GB hard drive died.
Download Fink, which will do the downloading, config and compiling of unix programs for you.
Fink Commander (do a search) has a nice front-end (not the terminal) for fink.
"It supports both full-screen and rootless operation, and has OpenGL support. " From the 'Installing XFree86' section (X11 is XFree86 just to not confuse newbs )
Reading the 'History' and 'Introduction' parts will clear up A LOT of confusion about the various implementations of X11 on OSX.
KDE is available from the fink people. Check this out. I haven't tried it out. From that page it appears to be at the equivalent of a beta level.

Read this.
Skip task #1, just go here instead.
That pdf also tells you how to install GIMP, but of course you can skip that.
edit: Gnome does work, didn't see your post Barto.
