Apple next week will announce a new flat-panel iMac, a revised iBook, and iPhoto software, MacMinute sources have confirmed. The new iMac will feature a 15-inch LCD display with a G3 processor at speeds of up to 750MHz, if not faster. Sources suggest that pricing for the flat-panel iMac will top out at roughly US$1,800, with Apple offering at least one traditional iMac configuration to keep the entry-level cost below $1,000. There will also be additional speed bumps on the low-end iMacs. Details on the iBook revision are scarce, although sources indicate it will likely include a speed-bump and possibly the availability of multiple colors. Finally, iPhoto will extend the ease of use and functionality of Apple's i-line of software titles to image manipulation. Sources note that additional announcements will also be made.
Thanks for doing that psantora. I hadn't thought of that.
I hope the iBook doesn't change too much, since I just got mine about a month ago! Basically I just don't want them to give it a G4. I'd be jealous at that point!
They don't really add anything new to the debate. The upper price seems a bit to high and 750 Mhz is not a big enough speed bump for the high end model. I could see the iBook getting a second iPod-like color scheme, but no major hardware changes beyond using a 700 Mhz G3.

congrats on 100 posts, also, isnt the iBook scheme already iPod-like?
I was hoping for indigo!

Thanks. Not totally. I've never seen one in person, but don't they use some kind of metel and plastic body? I thought the iPod was white plastic on top and silver metel on the bottom.

Well yeah, the iBook doesnt have the metal, but the front is the same. I think that is enough of a match, I mean why make 2 iBooks that look 50% the same and the only difference being a little metal here and there?
The metal in the iPod is so it matches with the TiBook me thinks...
Sources close to Apple US have indicated to MacUser that the company will announce its first 1GHz Power Mac on Monday.
Although details of the product are still unclear, the new Power Mac is believed to use the next generation of G4 processor, previously codenamed Apollo. This chip is likely to be called either the PowerPC 7445 or 7455, according to sources familiar with the project.
Other features about the new Mac remain unclear, although it is understood that the fastest configuration is unlikely to be immediately available.
Motorola?s current roadmap for the G4 series of processors calls for the product to achieve speeds of over 1GHz during the coming year, suggesting that the new chip will not be the end of the line for the G4. The next generation PowerPC, G5, is on course for delivery in the autumn, with speeds beginning at 800MHz and increasing over its lifetime to beyond 2GHz.

just thought I'd add another headline to the thread. MacUser is usually on the ball.
Apple would not hype this much for a G4 topping out at 1GHz. It would be enough of a letdown without them getting our hopes up. To do so would defy logic.

I hope this is not true - a 750 Mhz G3 imac (even with a flat panel display) is not going to rev many engines. I'm still going with G4 imacs and G5 powermacs - otherwise this has the potential to be a disappointing MWSF (especially with Apple going into overhype mode!)
<strong>"a G3 processor at speeds of up to 750MHz, if not faster."
What kind of writing is that? Either it should not include the words "up to" or omit "if not faster." That discredits most of the article in my view.</strong><hr></blockquote>
I agree bad writing, but they could also be editorializing their "source" with a dose of wishful thinking. Any speed bump would have to be more than 50 Mhz and a real source would know that and have more believable specs.
MacMinute has done pretty well predicting specs within a week or two of Apple events this past year.
The iMac specs make perfect sense:
1. 750Mhz or so G3 - that's where the G3 is right now, not 1Ghz like some (ahem, AppleInsider) have reported. And a G4 in the iMac would jump the price up too much.
2. 15" LCD - that's what several news reports have said Apple has been buying recently.
An iBook bump is also believable. Apple sees the iBook as what the original iMac was - and they bumped that iMac constantly in its first year and a half.
The only thing that surprises me is that no mention was made of PowerMacs. I think it's pretty good odds that they'll bump PowerMacs with the G4 Apollo to just above 1Ghz. So why didn't they mention it? Maybe trying to stay out of the G5 mess?
Why do we need G4 iMacs... just buy a Pro model!!!!!! hello!!!!!! consumers need low cost, a 800Mhz - 1GHz G3 would be just fine for a consumer. I think that it will be flat pannel iMacs w/ G3 up to 1Ghz, G4 up to 1.2 to 1.4 w/DDR ram. And hopfully this new iWalk thing!!!! That would rock!
I remember in the summer when everyone was predicting LCD iMacs, MacUser came out and said that the iMacs were going to retain their same form factor. I didn't believe them then. I do now. I say we'll see a G4 at 1Ghz and an iMac at 750Mhz or so. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

NICE
iMac only G3 not so nice...
dunno seems possible but not "blown away" stature.

PowerMac G4 at 1GHz
Tagline: "1GHz down, one to go"
So who is inclined to believe MacUser and MacNN?

with G3 processor @ 700Mhz or better
