Apple Caves Into 10.1 Buyers

Found on deal mac this morning. Nobody seems to have noticed elsewhere that 10.1 buyers will be able to get Jaguar for $19.95 instead of paying $130 again.

?Apple revises Mac OS Up-to-Date for Jaguar

10:13 am ET, Aug 12, 2002

Apple reinstated its Mac OS Up-to-Date program. Buyers of a qualifying Macintosh computer on or after July 17 may upgrade to Mac OS X 10.2 for $19.95 plus sales tax. (Qualifying computers are defined as Macintosh systems sold by an authorized Apple reseller that do not include Mac OS X 10.2.)

Those who purchased a retail version of Mac OS X 10.1 are also eligible.?

    That's not surprising.

What people were complaining about was buying OS 10.1 last year and THEN having to buy an entirely new copy of 10.2 at the same price.

    $130

Effectively, $260 for .1 worth of upgrades.

obviously, people who bought 10.1 within the last couple weeks ARE going to get a break.

People wanted a reduced price for already owning OS X.

They didn't feel a incremental .1 upgrade warranted paying full price all over again.

They want a reduced upgrade price.

    And I'm inclined to agree.

    key blurb:

"Buyers of a qualifying Macintosh computer on or after July 17"

this is the typical up-to-date policy from years past, but I thought we should point it out before everyone thinks that any 10.1 user can upgrade for $20.

I would also argue that a .1 update in Mac OS X is at a larger magnitude than a .1 update in CLassic Mac OS. *nix and NeXT version numbering has always been different in that sense. Just compare the 8.5 -> 8.6 or the 9.0 -> 9.1 updates to 10.0 -> 10.1 and now 10.1 -> 10.2.

    This is old news.

Note that this offer applies only if you bought your copy of 10.1 or a new system on or after July 17, 2002, i.e. the MWNY keynote where jobs announced that Jaguar would ship August 24. In other words, if you bought 10.1 or your new system before July 17, you're still screwed.

But that point is moot, as Apple could have called Jaguar "10.5" or "11.0" as well.

I don't read it that way. It is a new release dated today and the only change is about 10.1 owners. NOT OLD NEWS and it reads that if you bought 10.1 retail anytime since last Fall at full retail that you get 10.2 for only $19.95 more. NOT just since July 17th.

what about if we bought an iBook 4 or 5 months ago and it came with 10.0.3, 10.1 upgrade, and coupons?

"Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac OS X v10.1 retail product or a new Macintosh computer on or after July 17, 2002, that does not have Mac OS X v10.2 ?Jaguar? included can upgrade to Mac OS X v10.2 ?Jaguar? for US$19.95.* See ?Terms and Conditions? for program details."

The dateline is from DealMac, not Apple. Read the Apple page. As I said above, you qualify only if you bought 10.1 retail after July 17.

No luck, unless Apple changes its policy once more.

I do NOT agree with Escher. Apple "REINTATED IT'S UP-TO-DATE Program" It is a CHANGE in policy to include ALL 10.1 Retail Buyers.

Sorry "REINSTATED" the Up-To-Date Program includes ALL 10.1 buyers Escher. This is NEW and NEWS not a rehash. This is a new release from Apple PR. The website is just behind the change curve.

Your interpretation of DealMac's post is correct, Multimedia. However, I can't find anything that says ANYone who purchased full retail (another caveat there) 10.1 is eligible, not on their PR or upgrade pages, nor in the upgrade .pdf form. No searches bring up anything like this either. Everything on Apple's site says that you have to have either purchased a new Mac or 10.1.3 at full retail on or after July 17th. Either Apple has yet to make any official mention of this change or DealMac is wrong.

DealMac didn't say ALL. They just weren't specific enough for this guy, who wants to jump on it.

Escher are you right? I have coupons sitting here from my Circuit Shitty iBook purchase 4 months ago... apparently they're useless?? I'm still confused! Shouldn't we get 10.2 for $20 if we bought hardware 4 months ago? Isn't this usually how Apple does things? I'm not flaming or anything, just curious! According to the Apple Up To Date page I don't think I qualify (only Mac purchasers after July 17? That's crazy!) But BuonRotto said the Apple website is behind the curve.

    *Sigh* Me --> :confused:

pyr3 I have to ask you this, it's been bugging me. Can you explain your Signature?

I think you phrase the situation quite succinctly, Aquatik. Again, unless Apple changes policy once more. But as we all know, Apple (Jobs) is stubborn and won't change this.

    We'll have to remain sad-faced.

...or download and read the form you have to complete to get the update, which says:

    [quote]Mac OS X 10.1 to 10.2 Software Up-To-Date Terms and Conditions
    • You must have purchased Mac OS X 10.1.3 (M8545LL/B) on or after July 17, 2002 to participate in this program

    So 10.1-owners are still screwed.

It's from Happy Gilmore. Happy says that he's going to win the tournament. Then Shooter McGavin says "Yea right, and Grizzy Adams had a beard!". Then this dude on the side says "But Grizzly Adams really DID have a beard." So Shooter says "whatever" and walks off.
