Using Jaguar, have some questions...

So I have been using Jaguar for two days now. I have a couple questions for those of you who have been developing it or testing it or whatever...



1. What happened to the system sounds? I remember reading that for a while, system sounds were included in some Jaguar builds. Was this removed for any paticular reason?



2. Where is Inkwell? Is it shipping later with iCal and iSynch? I thought it was built in to the OS?



That's all I can think of right now...

    I have a question for you: How did you get it? I'm starting to get irritated by the fact that it seems everyone around me has it, and I don't! Any particular place I should look? (I have ordered it, so I would not be pirating it)

    Bodhi,

    Inkwell only shows up as Ink in the system preferences if you have a tablet connected to the system. Otherwise, you'll never see the preference pane. As for system sounds, I don't really know, I get them occasionally but it's hard to tell if my TiBook is just having problems outputting the sound (the amp falls asleep after about 20 sec so it takes some time to warm up. Known problem w/ no known solution ).



    As for where to get it: if you don't know, you won't find anyone hear to tell you (at least publicly). It would violate AI's policy.

    The system sounds aren't as ubiquitous as in OS9, but they can be turned on or off in the Sound pane of the System prefs. It's just a single check-box.

    There is a bug with system sounds.

    At least for me on a Dual 800 and on my iBook 600. You can find them in:

    System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/



    Emptying the trash - No sound

    Volume Mount/Unmount - No sound

    etc, etc, etc.



    The only one working for me are :

    move to trash and poof item off dock.

    And the two sometimes with a short or long delay.

    I have no system sounds. The only option in my system preferences/sond is the sound effests like that was in 10.2, basically the sound it makes if there is an error or something. But nothing for like emptying trash or anything like that.

    Hmmm. Yeah, that's odd. They worked fine in 6C35 on my dual 800, but now only a few work, and sporadically at that.

    System sounds, FTP in the Finder, and a number of other "new" features are seriously broken in 6C115.



    THAT is why there has been so much bitching and confusion as to why/if 6C115 would be the GM.



    Solution? Wait for 10.2.1. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    I've heard talk that 6c115 is the version being released with the new hardware offerings (that it went to the presses early for obvious reasons) and that another build might show up in the retail boxes.



    Either way, probably not enough time elapsed between the builds to fix all the big bugs. If that's what they really are. Until I hear a lot of people confirming the same problem on different hardware setups I remain skeptical of claims that Jaguar is buggy.

    If anybody here has used both the developer version and final version of jaguar, I'd like to know if the final version is faster than the developer version (with the debug code).

    There is no significant amount of debug code that is removed for the GM that will magically make everything faster.



    There were many heated arguments back when 10.0 was released that the GM would be x amount faster without the debug code. They were all wrong.



    6C115 is 6C115. Period. There are no different "versions" of 6C115. If there are any changes, the build number changes. What would be the use of even HAVING a build number if it didn't signify a different, well, build? People have compared the checksums of the developer build of 4K78 and 5G64 to the retail copies of 10.0 and 10.1 and they were identical. Checksums are extremely difficult to "fake" a match and nearly impossible to match by chance. The same will happen when people get boxed copies of 10.2.

    The ftp feature in the Finder has at least 9 known bugs. Most of the other bugs are cosmetic and relate to the Finder.

    Most of them will be fixed in an update that is likely to appear early in September.

    Until that update, 10.2.0/6c115 is what people will be getting in boxed copies and with machines.
