Steam on PC... the way forward for Apple TV?

Steam is a platform for PCs that cuts out the traditional gaming machine + game distribution model, in much the same way that Apple's App Store rejiggered the calculus for phone application sales and distribution.

Might this be a good model for Apple TV to transform into a gaming machine?

I see it being more like:

    http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardwar...vidia-ion-pc/1

Plays Call of Duty 4, 1080p video including Blu-Ray, has USB2 ports, HDMI.

It will come with a wii-mote like device for games in some bundles and is well suited for the living room as it's small and quiet.

Sounds like a pretty good ATV to me as long as Apple don't keep the price too high. No point paying a lot of money for a decent machine to have it crippled to being a media center if PC manufacturers sell uncrippled PCs with the same spec for close to the same price.

It will be interesting to see how easy it would be to turn an Ion-based ATV into a proper Mac. It could be a great way to get a cheap family computer. Atom isn't great but it's perfectly suitable for average family computing.

As for Steam, itunes is already enough for delivering games via download. It's like Steam but with video, music and mobile apps.

Yeah I know...lol. JtD didn't really offend but I figured I'd test out here.

It's a riot to use when Google provides a clear answer to someone who just lazily asks

    a question.

Im positive the App Store model will make its way to the Apple TV. Just look at Boxee, Hulu, etc. Providing licensed plug-ins and modules to expand the content is the way to go (and getting the right frameworks and APIs to do it in a robust, quick way). Steam is a good example from another genre/market. Heck, look at the XBOX360 and TiVO now - they are doing the same thing. Everyone is signing deals left and right. Factor in Amazon, Blockbuster, Roku, etc and you have a VERY interesting situation.

I'll be right there rooting them on if they can implement it in an intelligent way.
