Best subtitle solution on the Mac?
I have been fiddling around for while on this, I cannot seem to find a simple solution.
A movie file, a matching subtitle, but no simple way to stick them together and transcode for playback on other device (likely PS3). This is frustration. Any Mac devs out there should see this as an opportunity to fix a problem.
Anyone know the best solution for this currently?

You can't hard-code subtitles without re-encoding and the only alternative is to find a container format the PS3 supports that also supports subtitles. Also, how are you transferring it onto the PS3? Disc, network, HDD?
I guess you want to avoid re-encoding the movie but what format is your torrented swedish animal porn film in?
That Swedish stuff is overplayed. The Finnish stuff is all the rage now I believe.
Is it already in a format the PS3 can play natively? If not, you would author it to DVD using software like Visual Hub ( http://www.transcoder-redux.com/ ) or ffmpegX and in the options settings, choose the subtitles file.
It plays native, but I need subs. The only for PS3 is to hardcode them on, I just wanted an easy way on the Mac. I ended up buying the DVD. Life is Beautiful. The file my friend gave me was no good, as it didn't have subtitles. I would love to know how to add subs if ever I get stuck in the future. I can't even get FFMpegX to run correctly. Update, I have now installed those stupid components. It wouldn't work without them, so we'll see. Update 2: It's asking me to locate and install these components each time I Quit the damn thing. I am now Zapping that cursed app.

Yeah I know. Network. Medialink. I now have a 320GB drive in my PS3, woot!

You're probably better using Visual Hub. I don't like ffmpegX but it does have more interface options. Visual Hub has a command-line input so you'd add the ffmpeg parameters manually for adding a subtitle - the options are on the ffmpeg site.
If you have Quicktime Pro and Perian, it hard-codes subtitles on export. If the PS3 supported MP4 files, you should be able to open it in QT and do a straight export to an MP4 file. Quicktime is such a slow encoder but it should work. Don't test it on a full movie though, just crop it to maybe 30 seconds and do a test export.

Can you run your files back thru DVD Studio Pro? i.e. MPEG-2? You could make a DVD with subtitles, and then run it thru Handbrake... if you really need it done...
