    Another question.

Does the guy on the other side need the exact same software that I use?

    thats the main problem now...

there are OS X apps for video capture and stuff (BTV, etc) and more and more drivers (Macam, IOExperts, etc)... but not a single app to video conference with PC users for example!!!

    iVisit is eternally AWOL.

The ONLY place I have seen that lets you video conference is from <a href="http://www.webcamnow.com"; target="_blank">www.webcamnow.com</a>

any other info on Mac/PC compatible webcam software to video chat??

GOOD GOD webcam support SUCKS in OSX... so so so sad

The Unibrain and iBot should both work too. These FireWire cams use the same protocols as MiniDV cameras so set-up is as simple as plugging the camera in.

Most likely, although according to their website the folks at <a href="http://www.squidsoft.com"; target="_blank">SquidSoft</a> are add H.323 support to their conference app, which means it should work with Netmeeting (the very popular PC conference app).

They say this update will be available next month.

Are you sure SquidCam needs another SquidCam user to interact? You can't type in that user's IP address to the same effect?

Yes, actually. <a href="http://messenger.yahoo.com/messenger/download/mac.html"; target="_blank">Yahoo Messenger</a>webcam support works seamlessly across platforms. Granted, the seam is 2 frames per second on a 160 x 160 screen over a Cable Modem connection, but seamlessly enough for one's imagination. We still one of those, right?

Yahoo does offer a free <a href="http://messenger.yahoo.com/messenger/superwebcam/"; target="_blank">"Super Webcam"</a> that broadcasts at a more lifelike 20fps, however, like many internet applications, the mac os x version stagnates behind the windows one. In this case, 5.5 vs. 2.0 beta. Guess which version you need?

I don't know if you guys have thought of this, but if you own a DV Camcorder it works to the same effect- but better. You can use it at more places and have greater control over the webcast video. Something always gets to me when I am outside on the deck, typing away on my PowerBook while I wirelessly webcast video to my girlfriend thousands of miles away. Okay she lives 15 minutes from me.

    Power/iBook

    +

    AirPort

    +

    Webcam/ DV Camcorder

    =

    Probably nothing better to do.

I wonder if one could stream archived DV footage through WebCam software instead of live capturing. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> Anyone have an answer for this?

I'm still waiting for Logitech to get their act together and get some OSX drivers out for their webcams.

dont expect ANY vendor to have drivers for OSX. No one seems to care.

Only Firewire webcams seem to be well supported (builtin to Jag)

For your Logitech, go to ioexpert.com and check them out. Try n install the drivers anyway, you may never know.

Also, they explain how you can help them create the drivers. Something with MacOS 9 USB sniffer app... you plug in your webcam, this dev app gathers info and spurts it out in text. Send the text to ioexpert and they try n make a driver for it.

Thanks, but that link does not seem to exist.

    Sure you got that right?

Anyone spending $300 on a webcam should just buy a DV Camcorder. Sure, you must spend a bit more but you reap many more advantages from it.
