EPSON!

Am I *ever* going to get OSX drivers for my Epson laser printer 5700i? They published some laser printer drivers finally over the weekend on their french site, but not for the 5700i...it isn't an ancient printer. Anyone in the same boat?

Colour 580 printer, less than a year old.

    STILL NO DRIVER.

    I detest Epson.

Same here, I own a Stylus SCAN 2500 scanner/printer, it was a brilliant printer but Epson have just decided that there will not be Mac OS X drivers for it because it is not in production anymore (even though they will still make drivers for even older printers!)

The worst thing is they do appear to be working on a scanner driver! What's the use of having a printer/scanner/fax machine/photocopier if all it does is scan?

Just because they stop producing a product does not mean they all dissapear off earth and no one uses them anymore.

If I have to buy a new printer it definitely won't be an Epson one.

I used to think Epson weren't developing OSX drivers for older printers in order to get people to buy new ones, yet they make little if any profit on the hardware, it comes from the consumables like cartridges and papers. Either way it seems counterproductive.

I read yesterday that the drivers were available on Epson's French site. Didn't I? Am I going crazy?

I think it was on MacFixIt.

Well i used to hate Epson for not supporting my Epson Stylus Photo 750 back then, citing some technical difficulties. They eventually did, and it works like a charm, although i was inconvenienced the wait wasn't futile. Perhaps they really are experiencing some difficulties that make it less of a priority for them, since debugging will take precious manpower?

Try gimp-print. I use it for my Epson Stylus Photo EX, which doesn't even come equipped with USB. Supports 99% of all models of Epson printers. check it out.

The French drivers don't work for the 5700i, and neither does GIMP.

I decided to give up on Epson. I am giving my 5700i to my bro which works perfectly under Windows 98. I bought the Samsung ML-1430 for under 180 dollars. My money goes to companies that support Mac OS X.

Here's a review of that Samsung <a href="http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/0-2375165-405-20077458.html?tag=rev-rev"; target="_blank">here.</a> Sounds good, cheap and fast--how is it working for you so far?

I'm debating between this kind of a thing, or something networkable. Stupid question: if I get a printer with an ethernet port, and i network it to my base station, should I be able to print to that?

I am expecting the 1430 any day now from Buy.com. I will post a review on how it works in Jaguar.

About the ethernet port, if you use a DSL/Cable router, I believe you could print wirelessly. But why do this when USB Print SHaring has been added to Jaguar?

    You mean in Classic right?

I haven't seen an OSX native download on their site. I have the same printer and switching to classic everytime I want to print a photo or something (other than bog-standard text) is a real ball-ache! (esp. as if left to 'screen save' whilst both OS's are running it wont wake up correctly. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

    BTW...

Anyone using the Epson Photo 950, does that operate OSX native?

Can anyone recommend a good flatbed scanner with a photoshop 7 (OSX) plugin that works?

Photo's aint no fun since X...

I tried downloading the Epson French drivers for the 5800 (somewhere somebody claimed that it would work for the 5700i) but no such luck. What's more frustrating is the fact that I have no idea where the files were installed on my hard drive so I couldn't uninstall the drivers (I tried looking through the install package for a clue but to no avail).

I plan on reinstalling Jaguar fresh anyway once I get a new hard drive for my Ti.

    <a href="http://support.epson.com/hardware/printer/inkjet/pho750/index.html"; target="_blank">this is what i was talking about</a>

FWIW, I've never been fond of classic.

Sorry to dig up an old thread.

Just to clarify things in case you missed...

The 5700 (also the aforementioned Photo 750) is not listed as supported, according to the <a href="http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php3"; target="_blank">gimp-print Supported Printers</a> page; however, it does fall into this category at the end:

[quote]The following printers are not all officially supported, but they have been reported to work with the listed driver. In some cases, they may work incompletely, or they may not actually work at all.<hr></blockquote>

    Listed as:

    [quote]Printer Model\tDriver\tCompatible Printer

    Epson EPL-5700\tpcl-4\tHP LaserJet 4 series

Epson Stylus Photo 750\tescp2-750\tEPSON Stylus Photo 750<hr></blockquote>

Just to level the field a bit, not many other companies are releasing drivers for older printers under OS X either. Epson is just the most notorious example.

    If you really want a mess, try to hook a printer/scanner/fax combo unit into OS X. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Epsom, is hopless. I have a very expensive scanner GT-9600 and they still do not have any drivers inspite of what is says on there web page. The fact that they are not supporting older equipment will mean that they will lose FUTURE sales of new products. Very short sighted.

Better than Umax which charges for drivers right? HP seems to be dragging its feet too, releasing Jaguar drivers only recently.
