pirating jaguare (curious about the facts, not a how-to guide)

im not interested in pirating jaguar, but im curious since it was predicted that jaguar would be the most pirated os ever.

what are the downfalls of, lets say, burning jaguar from a friends cds and installing it on your computer? what kind of problems would that bring to the system?

would you still be able to update to 10.2.1 or would apple see that the same serial # is used on two machines?

AFAIK, there is no serial # in MacOS 10.2

The only problem you have to deal with while copying Jaguar is an ethical one.

If you aren't interested then I see no reason why you would want to know...it shouldn't matter if your copy is legit.

Except for being dishonest there wouldn't be any problems.

Why will there be problems? Here is a semi-legitimate reason to worry. A bunch of people in my office installed using my CD. We have six copies on order, but purchasing is kind of slow and I couldn't wait so I bought a copy for myself, installed it on my machine at work and then at least three other people borrowed my CDs. It is not like Apple isn't going to get the money anyway. I don't see that this can cause any problems, since the installer doesn't ask for any registration number, it is really hard for me to see where the problems can come from. However, if I am wrong, please tell me.

Yes, there will be several problems if you pirate Mac OS X Jaguar.

One of them will come to your house, rip out your guts and shove them down your throat, then rip them out again and throw them onto the highway so he can drive over them with his car.

You don't want to see him angry.

When I say "problems" I meant the circle of Hell Dante outlined in his poem The Inferno that is meant for software pirates.

Anyone know where I can score some weed?

I don't want to buy any, but I'd just like to know where it is because I'm curious.

    thx

The problems are you can say hello to product activation and serials being checked at apple when you install the next ver if you don't start going legit.

From my garden. But you better do it at night and take the first flight back to US because I will only hunt you down, rip out your heart so fast that you will still be able to see it pump before you pass away if it cost me less that $250.

Really dude, you must be a switcher because most of us DONT EVEN THINK of ripping off Apple for a couple of reasons- first, we want the platform to survive and second- we have to sleep at night.

Heck, an online story I read a few weeks back related how Mac users are half as likely as PC users to find serials online rather than pay for shareware.

So do what is right if you are thinking about screwing Apple. If not, as has been said, we will be dealing with activation codes, single-user once-per-lifetime installs, and other crap that smells of M$FT.

We are a Mac family. Don't take advantage. You should buy Jaguar. You DON'T have to buy .mac!

Clearly, you haven't been around, though it may be sad to say.

Copied and pirated versions of MacOS have been here since day 1. Do you suggest that noone, back in the day, was copying the 5something diskettes which made up system 6 ?

And moreover, may I make the claim that things like HotLine and Carracho, respectively were and are deeply Mac-rooted.

Both in Macworld as in PCland you have cheapo people. And frankly, looking in my eye, how many of you ever paid for Photoshop?

Weed you can buy in Holland, in real shops (coffeeshops, though you may now that).

AppleInsider is not the place to look for advice about pirating software.
