Briefly: Canada gets HD TV shows; illuminated iPhone logo; more

Canadian iTunes users are seeing the first wave of HD TV shows crop up on the localized version of the digital download service. Meanwhile, a new report claims that the Apple logo on the third-gen iPhone will illuminate just as the iPhone maker is said to be taking receipt of logic boards for the new handsets ahead of production.

Canadian TV shows

iTunes shoppers waking up in Canada this morning were greeted with a slew of new TV shows on the download service, including the first batch of titles in high-definition. The offerings are mainly from US networks such as Fox, NBC, Warner Bros., and NBC, and include such popular titles as 24 and Lost.

Standard definition copies of the shows fetch $2.49 a piece while the HD versions run a buck more. Season passes for the same formats run $49.99 and $69.99, respectively.

Illuminated third-gen iPhone logo

Meanwhile, TechCrunch is citing a source who has reportedly seen one of Apple's third-gen iPhone models "with his own two eyes" in reviving a rumor from months ago that logo on the back of the unit will illuminate.

The report, which is disturbingly vague, also claims confirmation that new handset will sport the redesigned black front bezel detailed in a set of photos from earlier in the day.

iPhone Rendition and 2,1 icons

Assuming rumors surrounding the new bezel are accurate, the third-gen iPhone may look something like this artist's rendition posted to the AppleInsider forums by member Carniphage.

An artist's rendition of an iPhone with the above bezel.

The subtle but noticeable design tweaks may explain why icons for "iPhone 3,1" have yet to accompany those for "iPhone 2,1" in betas of iPhone SDK 3.0. Recent evidence points to iPhone 2,1 being a repackaged version of the existing iPhone 3G, with iPhone 3,1 representing a more advanced model with support for faster 3G networks.

Another AppleInsider reader who wishes to remain anonymous recently submitted some higher quality versions of the iPhone 2,1 icon files discovered over the weekend. They're identical to the icons for the current iPhone 3G, known as iPhone 1,2:

Apple receiving iPhone parts

Regardless of what the new iPhones will look like, DigiTimes on Wednesday said Apple is now taking receipt of printed circuit boards for the handsets which are nearing mass production.

Among the reported PCB suppliers are Nanya, Tripod Technology and Unimicron Technology. Flexium Interconnect and Career Technology reportedly began shipping their boards to Apple's facilities earlier in the quarter.

White 2.0GHz MacBook for $848.99

Finally, our sponsor MacMall dropped us a line to let us know that they're blowing out the 2.0GHz white 13-inch MacBook for $848.99 following yesterday's introduction of 2.13GHz models, which they're selling for $929.00. They had only 150 of the 2.0GHz models left as of this morning. We've also updated our Mac Price Guide with other retailers' prices for both models.

Does anybody know or have a guess when the new iPhone will be available to purchase?

Immediately after announcement, weeks or months later?

    Thanks

Sweet! Finally! Thank you Apple + Networks!

They're expensive ($60 - $70CAD per season in HD) but this is great!!

Probably around 3 to 4 weeks after announcement.

As for the illuminated light? Funny guys. Won't happen. Apple is trying to DECREASE its battery impact, not INCREASE it.

If we use the last two years as a guide, I?d say that Friday, July 10th or 17th are the most likely dates, though there are new variables that make it unknown until Apple announces it.

Illuminate the Apple and drain the battery even faster?

Surely it only illuminates briefly when you get a text or notification, or when there is an incoming call, or when you take a picture in the dark.

Maybe it's that green plastic glow-in-the-dark stuff that you hold under a light source and later in the darkness it glows for a while.

(Disclaimer: I'm joking. This idea is equally as silly as illuminating the logo. Someone at Apple probably leaked the rumor (or maybe even made a fake unit with a glowing logo) to throw the rumor mills into a tizzy. I often wonder how often Apple push out fake rumors to keep things interesting!)

When will AppleInsider post a link to this link I wonder?

If they do the logo light it will have to come from the LCD somehow so it doesn't use any extra battery.

It's neither a flip nor a slider phone therefore totally unnecessary except for using as Apple bling. And then who could see it?It's an advertisment for theft.

The apple logo on laptop use the light of the screen, there is no extra light for this, I can imagine they can do the same thing to the iPhone.

    So no extra battery

About as significant as that fart I just did. iPhone OS 3.0 requires iTunes 8.2.

Could it be a typo? Somebody just told me that so you may very well be right but maybe they mean 8.2? hmm...

That would mean the back of the screen light. I guess it helps differentiate from all the touch screens out there now.

I don't care if it can get better battery-life. I don't want to see an illuminated Apple logo on my phone. I even hate that my Airbook glows up, and says:

"look over here, in case you missed it this guy is using an Apple!!"

The chrome Apple logo is simple and it works, don't mess with it. In fact, make the Apple logo on the lappies chrome too, now that I mention it.

Please mention that it's $899 less $50 rebate. $849 is slightly misleading. Thank you.

    Amazing... Canada first? Yowser!

But yes, very expensive. I wonder if they'd sell twice as much if they halved the price? Spending 3.50 on a tv show is steep.

But there are others of us that actually like this idea of a glowing icon.... so what's Apple to do? Offer both?

It does need some sort of status light though, just like on the laptops: a silvery pulsing light somewhere. I always thought it would be cool if the bezel kind of pulsed like that but I think I'm the only one.

Related to lights, if you look where the earpiece is, does anyone else notice a small green light? It says the picture is an artist's rendition, but I wonder if that signals anything like videophone capabilities or just an artifact/embellishment.

It doesn't have to use more battery, it will see through to its LCD screen, just like MacBook Air does.
