Yesterday I was at an Apple Store, and I noticed...

...that the Jaguar OS's running on their display/demo systems don't open OS 9, although it seems to have been an option.

On a dual 867 I opened System Preferences, selected Sytem: Classic, then the machine worked for a short bit, and decided there was no OS 9.

My question. Was it merely disabled on that specific Mac? Does Jaguar fully support and ship with OS 9 for use within or without a shell?

I apologize if this's been covered before.

if there wasn't a System Folder in the HD then Classic wasn't installed on the machine.

When I bought my copy of Jagwire it didn't come with an OS 9 cd. Only the 2 Jagwire cds and the dev tools. About the store mac not having classic, I guess they just didn't install it.

I think even the new Powermac's have stopped shipping with OS 9. I guess Apple is really serious about getting away from Classic.

Apple doesn't control Quark. Quark is a group of self serving arrogant prepress dorks who think the world will end without them. They don't seem to know that without a Mac OS X version, they're going nowhere fast and someday soon will be all alone with nothing but the PC version to keep them warm. Apple sent them a message in the form of no OS 9 booting after January of 2003 and buy a G4 tower now and get Adobe InDesign for FREE.

Quark has 3 months left before there is no more OS 9 available from Apple. It'll be interesting to see where this goes. I personally made the switch to InDesign a long time ago and have never looked back.

Quark's days are numbered. I don't care how good it is.

InDesign is winning (not only cause it is better IMHO) but because Adobe is (relatively) on top of their game providing well-written OS X apps. Now if we could just teach them Cocoa...

Much of Quark's problem is that they constantly cater to tight-wad print shops like the one I used to work for. I quit (seriously) after I was informed they wouldn't be updating to OS X until mid-year 2004. I got so sick of trying to keep a workgroup running with a 9.1 blue and white as the main server.... Crash city.

I swear that most print/design shops hold onto their budgets tighter than their jewels.

i agree. screw quark. they've been screwing us for long enough and their arrogance has just caught up with them. i'm 100% indesign now. while there are still some workflow issues that aren't quite up to snuff compared to quark, it's got many other positives that outweigh the negatives. and i like adobe.

quark is the syquest of the next two years. and i'm happy about it.

Quark is its own problem. If they can;t get an OS X version of Xpress out the door soon then they are probably going to lose a lot of new customers, especially when Apple is giving away InDesign.

For your printer, you need to talk to the manufacturer of the printer.

For the scanner, depending on the brand, Apple is to blame. If your scanner uses TWAIN Drivers, then you can place part of the blame on Apple as they are in the midst of trying to figure out an implementation that they will satisfy both them and the TWAIN group. You can also see the manufacturer because really, when it comes down to it, the driver is not Apple's responsibility, it is the scanner manufacturers.

Back on topic: I'm sure the PowerMac without OS 9 was an oversight. All Macs still and will ship with some form of OS 9, whether it's bootable or just for Classic mode.

All the Macs at the Apple stores go through a weekly, if not nightly, restore process, resetting the OS and all apps to their "virgin" state.

The Mac you saw must have been missed, or customized for some reason.

Or perhaps, I'm privy to some top secret information!

Nah, I can't even attempt that.

I was just curious, because 10.2 wouldn't be such a great deal without OS9...

Being a relatively new mac user for about six months, i dun really miss OS 9 in my new Jaguar.

But i have heard and read many threads about the beauty of OS 9, and i fell sorry for u people. I remember i felt very sad when windows 3.11 faded away... <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

I believe my retail copy of Jag came without OS9 disks (still have them from X.0 though.) just the two Jag discs plus DevTools disc.

I have deleted OS9 from my computer (the day I installed DreamweaverMX and PSElements) and I got the same response from Classic ... you still get the START button in prefs, but when you try to start Classic, it spends a couple seconds looking for a SytemFolder, then tells you there isn't one.

As for the scanner drivers, I get the impression that some manufacturers (UMAX ?) think they will sell me a whole new scanner if they don't make an OSX driver. In reality, I'm just gonna badmouth UMAX and buy a new Cannon scanner... probably won't affect UMAX's bottom line, but it makes me feel better !

When the new Macs can't boot Classic, I'm wondering if they'll come with it anymore.

I think I remember hearing Jobs or maybe some press release say that you'd have to buy Classic separately if you wanted it.
