    so how is 10.2.2?

I haven't had many problems with iChat.

I agree though that they should just re-implement the Preview from 10.1. Feature creep set in, and the huge toolbars and drawers are just ridiculous. Why on earth would I not want to be able to see two images at the same time, if I opened them at the same time?

I hope to God there are some iPhoto improvements; as I've said before, it is the absolute slowest piece of software that I have ever used in my entire life.

I also found that Calculator is unbelievably slow, especially considering that it ran fine under 10.1. Whatever they did to it when they were sticking the little brushed metal face on cut its speed in half. The display can't even keep up with my typing when I'm trying to calculate things. It's ridiculous.

And to keep this on topic, I hope they have fixed all this stuff in 10.2.2

Well I have founf that since going to 10.2 I get a lot of spinning wheels and the machines seem to pause for no reason sometimes for upto 20seconds especially classic. So I hope that this is addressed. For my money 10.1.5 was the best and most stable.

I don't have Classic installed, but can confirm these problems. Sometimes launching an app takes over 50 bounces, even when it's just TextEdit or SystemPrefs. Sometimes OS X hangs for over a minute when trying to send an IM over Proteus (come on!). Those are ridiculous issues.

I was having a lot of lag with my Dad's 867 when I update installed Jaguar over 10.1.5. Everything seemed to be taking a lot of bounces to launch, system prefs took over 10 bounces to launch for instance.

I decided that I should do a clean install of Jaguar. After that everything is performing the way it should: System Prefs now launchs in less then a bounce and everything else seems snappier.

Maybe you should try a CLEAN reinstall as well.

Take a hint from Quarem, guys... if an app takes 50 bounces to launch, something is not right. It's not just "Jaguar", because that doesn't happen to most people with Jaguar. Do a clean reinstall.

The install *is* clean. This problem has been there ever since this install, which I just did about two weeks ago.

Have you tried iCal? I swear you can make a cup of coffee in the time it takes to change week...

Not a Jag issue, of course...

How much RAM do you guys have and how many other apps are you running?

If you have less than 256 and are running anything but one or two apps, there's your problem.

Too bad my iBook's screw on the Airport riser is stuck and I have a stick of 256 just sitting, but only 128 inside. OS X is still bloaty.

I had a similar problem with my wifes iMac. Here is how it finally came back to normal speed (2 bounces or less for app launch on a 400MHz G3 512MB RAM). This is anecdotal evidence, I do not know what changed.

I opened up the terminal and typed:

    sudo shutdown now

    entered my password when asked

    the machine shutdown as expected.

Once I got to the prompt at the end where nothing was going on I typed:

    exit

The machine restarted but never made it back into 10.2, I got a lot of error messages but never made it back. I shut the machine off completely with the power button. I rebooted it and when it came up it made it most of the way into X but took a long time like it was running FSCHK or something as the HDD was thrashing madly. Then when the desktop was just about to come up it rebooted again. After that the machine was very fast again. As i said, not sure what was up or if there is an easier way to do it, but it worked for me, and I have heard of others having the same type of experience after I had mine. Maybe you should try it. I guarantee it will not make things worse and almost gurantee it will make it better.

I have a feeling that FSCHK runs and fixes some major system problems upon unexpected shutdown and then reboots again after the errors are repaired. Anyone care to guess?

Just tried it out. One second or less to change weeks. Changing from weeks to months took about 5 seconds and then changing months takes one second again. Back to weeks takes about 5 seconds or less. And then one second to change between weeks. Once more, iMac 400G3, 512 MB RAM

Looks like I should put my specs in my sig.

iBook 700, 12 inches (not that it matters), ATi RADEON Mobility w/ 16 Megs, 20 Gigs hard drive (too little ), 384 Megs of RAM.

Thanks man. I'll probably try that out once my "fink install bundle-kde" is complete.

    * Completely restart your computer and hold the Apple and 's' keys during boot. You'll be dropped into a command line.

    * enter the command /sbin/fsck -y

    * if you get repair messages and **** FILESYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ****, run that command again.

    * When it says your disk is okay, enter the command reboot to restart.

If you keep running fsck and get the same errors over and over again, then there is some more severe damage to your disk than fsck is able to repair. You'll need a tool like DiskWarrior to properly repair things.

Also, I see you mentioned that you're running xfree86 on 10.2, right? Is *everything* you've added through the cli up to date? I ask this because I have read several reports of fink and xfree86 and other low-level tools seriously screwing up systems with Mac OS X 10.2. Our own Mulattabianca went through a long ordeal of problems with 10.2 until she discovered the cause was xfree86 and GIMP. I would strongly suggest reading up on said reports and seeing if your problems could be related.

    Hi Brad,

no, I'm not running XFree86 on this install *yet*. I am in the progress of installing bundle-kde, which will install XFree86 and all other needed stuff to get KDE and Konqueror running as well.

I'll try the fsck method (yes, I know that it's not fschk).

    No errors found.

Do you think that creating a boot CD and trying to defragment the system volume will help?

Whilst reading this thread I was wondering if anyone had any any feedback on 10.2.2?

Nothing specific yet that I've seen. ThinkSecret will probably have something within a week I bet. Basic features improved, major bugs fixed, etc. They have a solid track-record.

    I heard that 10.2.2 is going to cost $129 unless you bought Jaguar between Sep25 and Oct5. Then it will be $128. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
