NEW connect to server idea

I had a wonderful idea... considering there are servers that are listed in the "connect to server" window, wouldn't it be smart to just show the icon on the desktop and then when clicked it would ask for a name and password (if neccesary) ? It would sorta be like Aliases that were not always there...

And, maybe it could get what kind of computer it is, and if it one that the System understands it could show the icon of it. Say, an iBook would yield and iBook icon on it?

EDIT:'nother idea: use the finder pop-up dock menu to show a connect to server submenu and list the servers, when one is chosen it asks for your name and password (if necessary) and voila!

Like the Network Neighborhood icon that Windows has had for six or seven years?

LOL yeah... heh is there a way to use CONNECT TO SERVER in the finder to connect to FTP servers in 10.1.5? Like ive stated in one of my previous threads I'm having troubles with FTP under OS X. I''d be really dissapointed to hear that only Jag can connect to FTPs from the Finder, but thats ok. I'll take any answer and any help i can get.. My previous thread is <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=001647"; target="_blank">here:

I've always thought that servers that can bee seen in the Connect to Server... should show up under the Network icon. I'm guessing the network icon is for NetBooting or something like that because it's totally useless.

They'd still keep the Connect to Server for connecting to non-local servers (ie, via IP)

And re ftp, I'm not certain but I don't think it works in pre Jaguar versions and it doesn't work well in Jag.

it;s all to do with NetInfo really.

I believe that if you have an account on a server with a shared netinfo domain, when you sign into your machine the network icon will autoconnect you to your user folder and any shared resources that you are allowed on the server. it;s a great idea that no-one seems to know about.

There is an app (Sharity?) that will allow you to browse smb resources. It uses a hack to make the shares appear in the network icon.

I tried it a long time ago and thought it was great. I'm not sure why this is a hacak, but I like it. I konw the Network icon has its roots in NetInfo, but who cares? I have never heard of a network that uses it. I have been gettin my dept to make the switch to OSX. I've been doing one user at a time. Every one of them has clicked on the 'Network' icon and expected to find servers there. It just seems to make sense.

Apple should make this icon perform like the windoze neighborhood (ie all available servers/domains appear). If this is not possible, then they should install a 'switch' that would only make the icon visible when NetInfo is in use.

As it stands now, it is just bad interface design.

I agree. Its great that jaguar has networking features with windows, but the connect to server interface can be greatly enhanced. Hope a patch in the next update can solve the problem. but I hav a feeling we gonna wait till 10.3....

Maybe it should be a menu bar item, next to iChat. Global. When the network menu is clicked in the menu bar, it would list all servers available to connect to, as iChat lists all buddies online. Just select one, and voilÃ*! Put iDisk in there, too.

And that stupid "Network" icon in the Finder window...Eeeew. Get rid of that. It's confusing.
