Does anyone know how it actually works in Jag? is it simply supposed to be automatic? does it work w/ pc's on the network too? do you need 2 NICs?

my router died and while im waiting for a replacement from belkin, i thought id try to set up my mac as a router for me and my room mates winME box. so far, results have been rather shitty. i click to start sharing, however, the pref panel tells me nothing on how to set up the other machines to look at mine for internet. also, when i have it turned on, i also cannot connect. Does anyone know how this works?

vital stats, btw: os x 10.2 on an 867 g4 w/ dsl through earthlink. (pssst, dont tell 'em that im doing this, they dont like it

You have to download a software router like this <a href="http://www.vicomsoft.us/vig/vig.main.html"; target="_blank">http://www.vicomsoft.us/vig/vig.main.html</a>; you can either pay for it or just use the free 30 days in till you get your new router. Vicomsoft's Intergate is great I use it when I have friends over and they want to put their laptops on the net.

No need for Vicomsoft stuff or any other 3rd party stuff on my Macs. Just plug everything into a hub, start up Internet Connection Sharing on my main Mac, set the others to use DHCP, and I'm done!

but how the hell do you tell a winME box to use dhcp? that network properties panel is scary!

[edit: dhcp, dchp, same diff ]

Brad is exactly right, it couldn't possibly be any easier: Turn internet sharing on, then connect from any other Macs or PCs via DHCP. I did this with a friend's QS G4 recently, even I was surprised at how easy and flawless it was.

But you're on your own as to how to configure Win ME to connect via DHCP. Ugh. *shudder* been there done that never doing it again.

Do you have a hub/switch? Or are you trying to do this via airport?

Does running the DHCP server mess up cable connections as is potentially possible?

Yep, running an externally accessable DHCP server might piss off your ISP.

I think hardware routers differ in that DHCP isn't available from outside your LAN. (can someone confirm this?) Another option is to use two ethernet cards... although I might be talking out my ass.

I tried that with my macs and it doesn't work. My Cable Internet Service provider has a way of picking up on that kind of stuff, so in order for me to actually get it to work I have to use some kind of router. I played with it for a couple days before I realized what it was. When I lived at my parents connection sharing was easy just hit the check mark and plug every thing in to the hub but I was on dial up than to so no wonder.

does brickhouse still work under Jaguar? Because I want to do internet sharing via a switch and I figure DHCP will screw up my cable connection.

Yes it still works... I use Brickhouse along with Norton Personal firewall.
