    Or if you don't like VLC, you can make .avi files into .mov with divx doctor <a href="http://3ivx.com"; target="_blank">http://3ivx.com</a>;

    I'm assuming you are tryign to play a DivX encoded movie . . .

    <a href="http://www.divx.com"; target="_blank">http://www.divx.com</a>;

    There are late beta codecs there and a TON of info in the Mac Forum

    AVI is a container format, like QuickTime.

    You'll have to specify the audio and video codecs of your files if you want help.

    Another vote for VLC, plays nicely with no conversion.

    Like others have said, it depends on whether the AVI file uses DIVX encoding or something else (like Indeo 3/4/5). DIVX can be worked around, but no ports of the Indeo codecs are available for OS X. The only way to play those is to install the proper codecs in your OS 9 system and play them with an OS 9 Quicktime player.

    Maybe a step back is in order here - sounds like people are getting confused when VLC doesn't work for example. For those of you having problems, you need to understand that AVI files are not some sort of universal movie type. As Chucker said, AVI is a container, just like Quicktime. So an AVI movie can actually be a DIVX movie or an MPEG for example.

    Have you ever tried saving a QT movie from iMovie for example? there's a lot of options available, like MPEG 4, Cinepak, Sorenson, that sort of thing. So obviously just being a Quicktime movie doesn't define what kind of movie it is, because Quicktime is just the container, not the content.

    Same goes for AVI. maybe the AVI you got is DIVX, maybe it's a muxed MPEG 1, maybe it's something else. If it doesn't work in VLC, that's because VLC doesn't decode whatever codec the AVI was made with.

    Common, there is another solution here. Just download MPEG porn. The quality and diversity make up for any advantages AVIs used to have. After all, we all KNOW the only reason folks need to open AVIs is for porn. Limewire has TONS of nice MPEGs. You can just dl to your hearts content. Don't forget to share!

    I guess so. But after a while you just find the same old ones floating around people's hard drives.

    Another great thing about VLC is that it seems to be able to play partial files, great if you're not sure of the quality or content of what you're downloading, just drag the partially downloaded file to the icon in the dock. I've had great success with most AVI and MPG files but not with MOVs.

    Bah...I've been down this road for the past few years. I used the avi2mov BEFORE QT 6, and most of the divx/avi movies (not porn) played nicely with synced audio. After QT 6 I had to use DivxDoctor to convert them all over again, because the ones originally done with avi2mov did not play in QT 6. Again, I wish people would settle on a file format (mpeg 4 - please!?) and stick with it. I had no less than 12 full-length movies (DVD quality rips) that use to play in QT 5, now it's all a gamble. divx this, avi that... when half of these damn things don't play on a Mac BY DEFAULT, it looks bad. Apple is trying to create standards, but the standard is clear - a majority of people are using/making .avi files encoded with divx codecs. mpeg 4 is great and all, but no one is adapting it... at least for the things that matter like DVD quality rips! And on that note... where is my KaZaa Mac Client!?!
