The powwwwer of OS X !!

in macOS edited January 2014
I've just receve my external Cicero USB floppy drive for transfer my girlfriend's homeworks Since Mac doesn't have one, it's very usefull.

I want to test it and format a floppy.

Unlike OS 9, OS X don't have a format menu. Well, so I open Disk Utilities, and what I discover ?

I can format it HFS+ (hey, it's 1.44mb !) ok well... let's continue... next tab.

I can partition my floppy (!!!!!) wow. that's the option I want !! right now ! I want 5 x 260K partitions ! next tab...

I CAN DO A RAID SETUP WITH MY FLOPPY !!!! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> I like OS X !!! I want to set my seagate cheeta in RAID mode with my floppy ! If i put the FAT of the cheeta on "RAID floppy", that would be sreamming fast ! hey, it's RAID ! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Did someone recommend using RAID floppy for OS X swap ??

Sure, you laugh now. But wait until Steve pulls that out of his hat at MWSF when there's no hardware to announce instead. [Jobs]"With Mac OS X v10.2 Jaguar, you can even make a RAID with your hard drive and Zip disk - simply amazing"[/Jobs]

I won't be impressed until he demonstrates RAID on 8" floppies. Or 9-track tape cartridges. Extra credit for demonstrating a punch card RAID.

I guess checksums accross cards would be fast. Hold them up over each other and see that the holes line up?

Write speed would certainly take quite a hit.

    Wow Floppy RAID?!

This is going to be fast

I've got a RAID Cassette tape drive setup: 4 cassette tape recorders circa Commodo Vic 20, and all in a striped RAID array. Blazing speed, and I can even play Oregon Trail again!

Works with my CompactFlash PCMCIA adapter too!

    works with 128Mb Keydrive.

testing with various models of digital camera

the 20Gb iPod is actually two 10Gb drives inside,

not a single large disk, so it should be RAID capable already

this is theoretically a substantial discovery

at least insofar as memory sticks/cards will have nanosecond access while drives will have millisecond access... factor of 10 advantage...

except for that usb transfer in the middle of course

but an iPod or smart card raid is easier to cool than a rack mount. more portable too.

not to say i wouldn't love to see a Babbage Difference Engine RAID. They built a 'printer' for one a couple of years ago.

Silicon is for lightweights... real computers are solid brass.

sounds like a challenge suitable for woz.

prize winner for natural RAID technology has to be a hologram. all pieces contain whole.

I'm almost afraid to try and partition my floppy (In my USB SuperDisk Drive).

Though I am trying to just erase it right now and for some reason, it's been going for almost 5 minutes. It never took more than 10 seconds before when I tried it in Disk Utility.

Well.. now it's done Erasing.. But it didn't remount and in the list in Disk Util it shows 2 partitions. One called Unnamed and one with no name. ???

Now I'm partitioning it into one. Geeze. I shouldn't have tried this.

Dang.. I think I ruined my disk. It won't mount anymore. Jaguar does NOT LIKE MY SUPERDISK ANYMORE! SON OF A...

    What is RAID?

    Redundant Array of Independant Disks(Drives?)

    Independant used to be Inexpensive

I RAIDed a couple SCSI zip drives a while back. Not too fast, but about 80% faster than a single disk.
