Why can't I change my 'Home' icon!?

I'm running 10.2 - and I like to have my home icon in the dock with a custom icon - not the silly house. However, when I copy a new icon in the 'Get Info' window, it never changes!? Oddly, if I boot into OS 9, you can see it HAS been changed. But, booting back into OS 10 does not refresh the icon. It's like trying to change the HD icon pre 10.1...ridiculous.



BTW...I am going to > Users > Home and changing it there. Yes I used to be able to do this in 10.1.x

    Yup. Known issue.



    There are other icons that also ignore changes, such as the Utilities folder.

    CandyBar changes the icons system-wide and will not allow you to change individual home folders.

    does the utilities folder have a custom icon? I was under the impression that it didn't... it would be nice if it did tho... any idea where i can find a nice one?

    No, the Utilities folder does not have a custom icon. However, try to paste a custom icon into it and you'll find that you can't! That's why I mentioned it. Like the home folder, the custom icon is ignored.



    It would seen that Apple has a list of folders whose icons you can't change... or it could be some kind of bug.

    Hi,

    It is possible to change any of the protected system icons, basically you need root privileges on a file in:

    System/Library/CoreServices/SystemIcons.bundle/Contents/Resources/SystemIcons.rsrc



    If you open it in Iconographer (get it from <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com"; target="_blank">www.versiontracker.com)</a> you can then see all the protected system Icons, including some Classic ones...you can then edit the ones you want. A Restart and they'll start to take effect.

    However if you do it, it is at your own risk...I've never had a problem with doing it but you need to be at least aware or permissions issues/terminal skills

    And Apple says that Jaguar is extremely customisable. Ai least i can change my home icons in OS 10.1



    Wonder if 10.2.2 will fix this?

    You *have to* change the folders system-wide. This should not be. For example, you can't let different users have different custom home icons. You just change the main icon for everybody.



    And changing the rsrc file still won't allow you to put an icon on the Utilities folder. That one seems to be a mystery altogether...
