Pageins and Pageouts

in macOS edited January 2014
I recently learned about Terminal's "Top" program and I've been using it quite a bit. I learned that pageouts are when it goes to VM, but what's a pagein?

Right now my uptime is almost 4 days and I have about 25000 pageins and 15000 pageouts. Is that bad? Normal? Good? I have a dual G4/500 with 768 MB of RAM.

It's not particularly good or bad...

My computer has been up 22 days and I've racked up 449568 page-ins and 1378334 page-outs. I have 1 GB of RAM. Many of those page-outs came from software crashes ... memory leaks.
