Has everyone forgot the debacle that was the ROKR?
I don't know why no one ever mentions the beautiful-looking RAZR V3i (with iTunes) that came out shortly after the ROKR. A much prettier phone than the ROKR. It still had the inscrutable Motorola firmware and 100 song iTunes limit, but the hardware was lovely. That was my phone before the iPhone. I had a 2GB MicroSD card in it and several hours of 3gp video -- you can fit a lot of video into 2GB at 176x220! Of course moving on to the iPhone was like taking a trip into the future.
my 32gb iPhone has over 1000 photos and it's less than 2gb
That's not very many photos. How many mega pixels is your camera? How much space do your originals take up on your computer?
By default, iTunes does not put your actual photos onto an iPod/iPhone/touch. It creates "optimized" versions of your photos which are scaled down resolution and quality to make them easier to display on the smaller screen. The actual size will depend on what iPod you have. It will create a smaller version for your nano that it does for your iPhone. But in either case, your full resolution photos are not what's loaded. I was a bit surprised when I found this out because I had originally assumed that if my computer's hard drive ever crashed I'd be able to recover my photos from my iPod.
If you have an iPod, there is an option to include the full-size, original image. But this is still not what you see when you view your photos on your iPod. It will still get the optimized versions for viewing on your iPod screen, but it also copies the originals into another folder on the iPod. This is purely a backup/transport function. The only way to get those orginal photos back off the iPod is to put it into disk mode and copy them off (barring some third party access utility) and the iPod itself dosn't use those photos for anything.
Since iPhones and touches have no [official] disk mode, I also assume there is no option to include the originals when you sync with iTunes.
Matte is a niche demand, offset by greater demand for the brightness os the glossy screen.
Overrated issue
Matte is hardly a niche.
There have been studies that people who prefer matte screens fall into the 40 to 50% range.
When the is NO CHOICE, you learn to live with something, even if you'd prefer something else.
To take it a step further... Then you begin to convince yourself that LACK OF CHOICE is really better.
When I bought a ViewSonic monitor with a MATTE display, I wrote a letter to Apple telling them that had they offered a matte screened monitor, they (Apple) would have gotten my $700, NOT ViewSonic.
As far as my MacBook Pro is concerned, when it comes time to replace mine, I will NOT buy some piece-o-shit DOSBox. I will buy a Macintosh and get an anti-glare filter for the screen. Hopefully Apple will offer a matte option by then and I won't have to.
My self-hypnotic abilities aren't quite so polished.
How the hell did this devolve into yet another matte screen thing? My apologies, folks.
Think of how much more money they could having been making from Macs if they had offered a matte (or less high glossy) option over the last 2 years for the iMac alone.
I just finally gave in and got a iMac. My 2002 G4 tower (remember towers?) has a PMU problem. OK as long as I don't shut down. The glossy screen is not a problem in my work space at home. But I am holding out on my MBP, because I can't control the light on the road. C'mon, make it a made to order, wait a month. I'd order it today... And goes for a least 3 of my students...
No use for an iPhone: the local (Fiji) network isn't up to it. I'm hanging for the next model iPt.. coz 2 x 32 = 64GB in the iPt and that's (finally) enough for my music (ca. 3,000 songs) and good sized selection of the 25,000+ photos (not really interested in videos). Also expecting the faster processor, more RAM, auto-focus touch-screen camera etc. to migrate from iPhone to the next model which may well also have more spectacular battery life (sans 3G and other radios) than either iPhone or the current model. GPS and the compass (oh yes!) would be nice but not critical.
The chimerical Tablet may, alternatively, take my fancy. Should know in the next month.
There are still markets where the iphone is unavailable and for most of the U.S. the GSM network sucks (mostly because AT&T doesn't invest in infrastructure). While that is still the case, the touch will still have a place and probably beyond.
Right - and that's why Apple was forced to come out with a matte for the 17" Pro and there is rumour now it is coming back because many don't want and haven't bought a glareful Mac. How stupid of me, I totally forgot.
No one forced apple to do anything .
- MATTE SCREENS are DEAD. they just don't know it yet . they will soon join firewire
I would go out and buy a GPS-enabled iPod touch the minute it got out. It wouldn't be for driving alone but for biking. The screen is just the right size for enough information 'bout the track, my speed and even something as wattage and heart beat (i'm thinking of a polar hardware add on). It would be cool that Garmin would come out with a bike GPS add on (like Tom Tom for the car), they are further in that field of GPS systems.
I wouldn't like to take an expensive (only carrier free in my home country) iPhone out on the tracks.
iPod Touch is the gadget that competes directly with PSP and thats no secret. With camera (and maybe something even more) being reportedly added to iPod Touch later this year, it will be the gadget which beats the GameBoys and PSPs.
The Gameboy hasn't been puting up much of a fight since the '90s.
For once, an analyst has got it right. The iPod touch is a marvelous gadget for those of us who don't want to get locked into AT&T's pricey two-year contract. As I contemplate replacing my aging iPod mini, I know that the iPod nano is a direct replacement, but ask why I should replace one gadget that works fine with another that's functionally little different.[I] When I look at the iPod touch, however, I realize it offers so much more for only a little more money. The nano is a toy. The touch is a tool.[

I know Apple got burned in the early to mid 1990s with too many models of Macs. But when it comes to the iPod touch, they really do need more models to cover the market properly. They should consider creating:
1. Today's standard model, basically like the iPhone except for the cellular phone, so it can run iPhone software. That means a camera and compass in the next version. A GPS is a bit more iffy..
Great post, good idea's, may I add to it. I would add the GPS to all models and also the waterproofing.

Yes but your number 4 is also the same. So 2 and 4 would be the same model
w/ different colors .

These two are really one since kids are pretty wild too /
Maybe a shock case/with total water sealing case could be added and taken off at night so when at dinner your black tie ipod mode would be in-effect . Again great idea the ipod kids could act as a paint screen educational video player.
Again I think the kids could have the same model as the hikers but upgrade the hikers with a pro level model with more memory and maybe a carbonized unibody alum ballistic all weather case and a better camera . and the kids model would have a bit less biut maybe come with 100 top free educational app or something cool .
You got me thinking about a 9 x6 inch kids tablet with all your cool additions

Apple is without a doubt the best American Brand today.
Even if all it's products are made in China!

Exactly. Is he still on vacation?
Not that much...

The ROKR was made, marketed and sold by Motorola. It was not an Apple project.
