Apple rumored attending CES 2010 without Jobs

A seemingly casual remark reinforces beliefs that Apple will have a presence at CES 2010, but also that its chief executive Steve Jobs may not choose to steal the limelight by keynoting it himself.

A report on Wednesday night stated that Apple would attend the Consumer Electronics Show next year, though it's unclear whether the information comes directly from the Consumer Electronics Association's CEO Gary Shapiro or whether it's a separate, uncredited statement from the Wall Street Journal treating the Mac maker's presence as a matter of public record; AppleInsider was the first to hear that Apple was confirmed for CES 2010, but little else has been said in the half-year since the apparent discovery.

Whether or not Apple's co-founder Steve Jobs would present at the event, however, is less in question. In a sit-down with the media this week, Shapiro said that he's tried calling Jobs to invite him to present ahead of CES but hasn't heard back either from Jobs or a spokesperson.

Apple has usually avoided attending CES, considered the world's definitive home electronics event, as Macworld Expo has often been running at or near the same timeframe and given the firm little reason to attend two events while promoting the same message. With Apple pulling out of Macworld Expo 2010, though, the company is no longer tied to that specific show and would only feel compelled to attend events when they serve Apple interests.

Those people familiar with Apple's CES undertaking have previously told AppleInsider that much of the reasoning behind the move has as much to do about the electronics giant competing toe-to-toe with rivals for publicity as it does the freedom of announcing products on an independent schedule. That attempt to shift the spotlight has gained some unintentional outside support as a third-party group has secured a large Apple-focused booth area dedicated to third-party iPhone, iPod and Mac accessories.

Just how much of a presence Apple will have is difficult to gauge: even for Macworld or its own special events, the company has rarely telegraphed its intentions very far in advance, including whether or not Jobs or another major Apple executive will deliver a keynote. The uncertainty leaves any possible product unveilings up in the air. However, any new Apple products are more likely to be available soon afterwards -- in contrast to the typical firms attending CES, many of which often reveal products that they don't intend to ship for several months.

All we deal with here are rumors. It would get pretty boring around here if there weren't any.

I just noticed your signature. Heck, for the reveal day I was just going to do a mactouch thread in celebration. But you went ahead and did your own site! It would be cool if for launch day you can have for your site a little Steve Jobs cartoon figure showing off the mactouch triumphantly to scores of cheering fans at the Apple event while he stands on the corpses of the naysayers and tech critics.

Also have some appropriately annoying victory chant music in the background! Yeah!!

If do it cool enough you'll have all the tech and business blogs linking to your site in the days after the reveal day.
