Hello,

I am going to switch my girlfriend over to a mac and found a good deal on a 20in iMac G5. $250 but it needs a new hard drive. I think they take a 3.5in SATA drive, but will any of them do?

I wanted to buy this WD 80GB drive, will this work?

if the iMac uses a SATA drive, then yes, it'll work.

I'm not certain, but I THINK the earliest G5 iMacs still used non-serial ATA ... I could be mistaken though. In any case, any old SATA 3.5" drive will work in the SATA iMacs.

FWIW, I just went through this with the same machine. Basically it's open machine, replace hard drive with SATA drive (I used a 1TB WD) reinstall OSX and boot machine. Reinstall other programs and you're done.

NOTE: I understand the late G5s with the ISight camera are a more difficult install than mine.

    Honestly, I wouldn't go with anything less than a 500/750 at today's prices...see: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136319
