OS X 10.2.3 = Windows 3.1 killer

I've been keeping a candidate for the worst OS of all time for quite a while, and despite several forays into the linux world and system 7.5.2, Windows 3.1 has still stood the test of time as the all time worst OS ever released. That is until today.

Long story short, I wanted to burn some CD's for a friend. Most of my MP3s are on my mac, so I switched over. The first problem is that one MP3 was on my XP machine. "No problem," I thought, since I had just set up my mac yesterday to see my XP machine through both samba and microsofts remote desktop connection software (free download from MS for anyone also running XP pro on a PC). Well, something happened, my mac didn't like me today. No connection to my XP through either mechanism (and no it wasn't my PC, because I was able to access another share from my PC on another PC several times during this just fine). After losing my patience quickly in dealing with type -36 errors in samba and no connection in RDC, I fire up the ultra-kloogy Limewire and just download it from the internet again. The networking problem, had not beensolved, but at least averted.

MP3's at hand, I set out to commence burning. I (naively) start in iTunes. To burn 9 songs totalling 40 minutes, it takes iTunes 45 minutes with a 4x burner. So doing a little math, this is just BELOW 1x burning. Irritated, but persistant, I decided that for the next CD, I'd switch to Toast. Nearly an hour of music in a little over 15 minutes..this is what I like to see. I quit toast to get it out of the way, and go back to iTunes to prep my third CD. Once I have the playlist made, I start toast again, and now it says no burner was found. Fine...just restart and it will redetect it. WRONG. So I restart the whole machine, and once it reboots (which takes an eternity i might add) I start iTunes and toast again, and begin to burn. Toast preps the CD, and then burns just enough to make the CD unusable then says that it failed. Wonderful...so i grab another CD and decide that even if it takes a few days iTunes will at least finish the job. I quit toast and go back into iTunes and click the burn CD icon. No CDR drive found...again! A few reboots later (gee...I thought OS X never crashed..well it doesn't because you have to figure out that it did and then reboot it yourself!) iTunes finds the damn drive again, and I click burn. iTunes 'prepares' each track, and while it does this, at random points, it will say "Cancelling CD Burn" when I didn't click cancel!!

I don't want to start a flame war but probably will any way, so let me say that I've switched. Since OS X is inept in nearly every possible sense, I run XP nearly exclusivly for a number of reasons, but mostly because IT WORKS. I've moved all the important stuff over, and as soon as my mac feels like letting me transfer my MP3s over it will happily be out of my life completely. If X works for you, great...have a blast. It doesn't work for me, and this is the latest in a string of failures for it with me.

If apple is reading this, take note.

ohh boo hoo you couldnt pirate music.

Never had any problems with osx and ive burned 5 cds today using 2.3 and I must say osx has never let me down once in the past few months, absolutely adore it, best oss I've had the pleasure to use (out of: the windows/dos series, risc os 2-3.something, beos, various linux, irix, amiga workbench 1-2,TOS)

I hope ranting made you feel a little better. I've experienced none of the problems you seem to be having and I've got my iBook networked to a Win2k desktop. No problem here at all.

Well, Toast/iTunes/Disc Burner/Disk Copy have always worked fine for me, but the Combo drive in my new iBook is very touchy about what media it takes. Out of Imation, KHypermedia, and Verbatim media, only the Verbatim burned at 16x. The rest burned at 4x. This wasn't a problem on my previous combo drive (same burn speed, same company, but a desktop model with higher read speeds). So it's time to find some Verbatim CD-Rs... *sigh*

There are always cases in which an OS will screw up. Mac OS is no exception. I will not try to defend it by saying that you're "a jerk" or "stupid." I just wonder if your case is more of the exception than the rule. Perhaps the combination of those problems made it seem worse than it actually is. I've had problems connecting to servers, especially when Windows is involved. It doesn't recognize my username/password. Not a big deal to me because quite simply, there are other ways. But if that was combined with another problem or two, I'd be pissed (just like you).

Boo hoo indeed. You've had a bad experience on one Mac and you're ready to condemn the entire platform?

I've experienced DOS from 3.3 on, Windows from 3.0 to XP. I also support 120+ Win2K boxes at work. Microsoft peaked with Win2k, but it still keeps me employed and busy, if you get my meaning.

BTW, what Mac were you running OS X on?

I assume you kept the OS and apps reasonably up-to-date (10.2.x and iTunes, etc.).

Poor you! I have always had no problems burning cd's etc, and I have used some shit media in my computer and its been fine. Lucky me I guess.

first of all, i wasn't stealing anything. all my mp3's are from CD's I OWN. secondly, I CAN condemn an entire platform when I know other people who run OS X (on machines ranging from my Cube, to a strawberry imac, to a G3 500 laptop, to a G3 450 tower, to a brand new iMac) and these 'minor problems' happen on ALL these machines! I know, because I'm the one they call when it doesn't work...so OS X keeps me very busy if ya know what i mean. thirdly, why are we so defensive? If OS X "is the best OS on the planet", should users need to defend it? Shouldn't this be self evident? Fourthly, even if OS X is the best OS on the planet, THE MAC HARDWARE certainly isn't, it's years behind.

Lastly, I just transfered my MP3s over. How? Windows saw my mac when my mac couldn't see my PC. On that note:

FOR SALE: One G4 Cube...looks pretty, but runs like sh!t. For increased performance, install OS 9. Only thrown once. Cheap! Call 1-800-aple-sux <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

The reason your Mac couldn't see the XP machine is because you didn't disable the network firewall on XP Pro. OS X was just smart enough to allow the network shares through goober.

I?ve been reading these and other mac forums for several years and I?ve never seen so many negative posts on Apple hardware and software until just recently. Especially since the switch ads started. I wonder how many of these are bullsh1t. I wouldn?t be at all surprised if it turns out that many of these posts are put there by people who either are scared about Apple being more successful or just hate the mac platform. I personally believe 30-40% of them are just made up.

I've noticed certain trends too, although I've interpreted them a little differently. Since the Switch campaign, I've seen (obviously) more "newbie" questions for people transitioning from Windows, so there have been many questions about functionality, how to do things, finding equivalent behaviors, apps, etc. in OS X as Windows. On the other hand, compared to support and forum postings from a few years ago, there are fewer constant problems (there are still things like that around), and instead more extreme problems (or at least that perception) when they happen.

The strangest thing I find about this whole rant is that the extent of your troubleshooting seems to be "I restarted, and it still doesn't work." If there's something wrong - well, then there's something wrong... maybe more troulbeshooting is needed, beyond restarting. Have you checked your HD? Have you done an archive & install. The only thing I see here is someone waiting for an excuse to give up.

    Cheetah,

I would like to think the best of you, but it does seem rather odd that you would take the time to list in such detail, your problem, but supply so little data re. config which would allow other users to assist you in correcting it. I am a multi platform user myself with several machines which I depend on to keep the bread on the table-and perhaps luckily, have not experienced anything even vaguely similar to your experiences. If you would like solutions to this problem, please give us all more info on yours, and your friends configurations, burners, revs, media, memory, etc.

    Best,

    UXB

Did M$ pay you? Maybe it's one of those dead people that wrote to newspapers out west in protest of the DoJ v Microsoft??? or the dead people that wrote letters to the DoJ?

He's not even asking for help, he just wants to complian. Also, if he owned the CDs as he claimed he does, then he wouldn't have had to copy the file off of his XP machine when he could just rip the track on his mac. If he actually read these forums or asked anybody for their opinion, he would know that LimeWire is the worst P2P download utility available on a Mac.

This thread is useless, and I'm not going to spend more time typing.

Guys, come on. He's not malicious, just a newbie.

Unless of course he's not going to give us any information to say, *help* him, in which case we drag out the torches and pitchforks and hoist him by his giblets. Capice?

So, cheetah... what hardware (G4 Cube you say?), what burner (internal? external? speed?), what media brand (makes a huge difference), how much RAM, and are you sure you didn't launch the Classic iTunes by mistake? (No, seriously, I know someone who did that. They were extremely confused as to why iTunes was giving them about 3 frames per second on the visualizations.)

Actually, SMB and the Samba-server are two different pieces of software.. So one can work and not the other (as is the case on my computer, but the other way around =).

You might have owned the cds but its still piracy to burn em for friends

And I know users of the following:

    +TI800 -myself

+1st one of the "new" ibooks (so its pretty old now"

    +15 inch flat imac

    +a brand new dual g4

    +oldstyle imac

and not one of them have had any of the problems your talking about, let alone any of the other problems over the past year.

I love how if something goes wrong in windows people say like "oh ill jsut go and find how to fix it" but with mac its always "ARGHH ITS SHIT ITS SHIT I DELETED MY SYSTEM FOLDER AND IT WONT START ARGHH MACS ARE WORST EVARZZZ"

People dont need to defend osx, they're simply trying to tell you it must be a problem with your hardware or something you've prolly messed up (most likely) and mac hardware years behind? haha whatever you say, i dont know how some computer problems you probably caused yourself can make you come to the conclusion that the hardware is "years behind" and "years behind" would suggest it would have real trouble running photoshop 5 let alone 7, as a good friend of mine who has a pc which is about 3 years old and thus literally years behind, unlike mac hardware which runs everything from final cut to really fancy 3d apps like a slut.

Oh and if you want to see major os problems then move to windows, I installed the latest version of MSN messenger on a fresh 2K instalation and when it restarted to finish the install (hahah restarting to install an IM prog, utter comedy) then the machine refused to boot it would bluescreen during startup and then restart instantly to try and hide the fact it just bluescreened. Anyway the only solution was a reinstall, and let me jsut quote the win2k installer:

"an installation on windows 2000 already exists on this drive, warning all your files in my documents and the desktop will be erased"

jesus christ was it so hard to do the command "copy documents and setting to backupdocuments and settings" microsoft? good thing i didnt trust you and did it before running the setup but still thats ****ing moronic behavior for an install program and plus you mean if i hadnt used your retarded "MY DOCUMENTS MY MUSIC MY ANIMAL PORN" directories then i wouldnt have to worry about loosing my files. bah stupid.

anyway if you hate mac so much move to windows, no ones stopping you, and you dont have to come and ask us first so just go and do it, you'll beback in the end.

Actually SMB (now called CIFS by Microsoft) is a protocol and Samba is both a client and a server for it.

    Man, it's not that hard.

I use my iBook at home and at work with Windoze machines. Using Macs is not even condoned at work, but I can connect in both directions to the iBook, even with our draconian firewall.

    Hint: /etc/smb.conf

At home I use Microsoft's Remote desktop whenever XP Pro decides to stop recognizing my Logitech USB mouse. I connect my AMD machine to a G4 tower, iBook and my wife's TiBook.

I even connect with multiple users, because I set up different websites on the iBook under different ~home/Sites directories, and I use the AMD for testing and file copying (<a href="http://www.ghisler.com"; target="_blank">Total Commander,</a> née Windows Commander, is the best file handling program in an OS).
