Apollo Inside: A Rebranding of the PowerMac to Fix Everything

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
I've figured out a scenario that Apple could implement! Several of you have said that the G4 has outlived its usefulness, while others of you don't believe the G5 is ready. Most of us aren't comfortable with the Apollo G4 being renamed to the G5.

WHAT IF Apple dropped the "G" processor for a while, and just called it the Apollo? This would give them a "new" processor for the PowerMacs, they aren't lying by changing the name, and they can wait for the G5 to finish being developed.

Steve:

"We have been very happy with the performance of the G4 chip. Today, we announce new PowerMacs with a new processor. Today, we offer the PowerMac Apollo, utilizing the same Velocity Engine that the G4 used, and with significant enhancements in architecture and speed."

Introducing PowerMac Apollo.

A god among the others.

Now, assuming that the G5 isn't ready for release, this could very well work. And please, spare us of the "yeah, that would work, but the G5 IS coming out."

yeah that would work, UNTIL the G5 came out. Would confuse people. No? SJ likes things simple. Be better off calling it the G4e or G4+

    Good idea, bad implementation...

Don't think it's going to happen, but not a bad idea.

Yeah, then the G5 would be the PowerMac Goldfish.

and the G5 Mobility would be the PowerBook Tadpole.

That is an idiotic idea. It might appeal to RDF-ed zealots, but the rest of the computing world would simply shake its collective head and dismiss it as another Apple smoke-and-mirrors trick.

Apple is supposed to be looking for respect in the computing world, remember?

Oh and Itanium, Celeron, and Duron are such awe-inspiring names I don't see how Apple could do any worse than those.

We'll see. To me, the name G4e or G4+ seem like saying that a value meal is "supersized." It's just as much smoke and mirrors to me. It's like Apple is saying that the G4 has outlived its usefulness, and now they're going to make it a little groovier.

    It was an idea.

There's more of a difference between the original G4 and the current one than there is between the current one and the Apollo.
