Why does everybody keep talking about flat tablets with no keyboards? There are other kinds of tablets, such as convertible tablets which are regular laptops with touchscreens that can swivel around and fold down over the keyboard. Wouldn't a convertible laptop running full Mac OS X be far more useful than an oversized iPhone?

i've the work of some demographics people and we are supposed to be in the midst of another baby boom similar to post WW2. Seems to happen every other generation. there are going to be more ankle biters around and parents will pay dearly to shut them up and keep them entertained on long trips and out on the town or whatever.
anyone who has kids will tell you that you have to take a lot of crap with you whenever you take your kids somewhere. buying a tablet that will keep you from carrying around pounds of crap is well worth it
Not all parents would be willing to part with $600+/- just to keep their kids entertained when a headrest mounted DVD player and a Disney DVD would do it better and cheaper.
It's funny that you say this, at the starbucks where I live there is a woman who sets up her iMac at a table every day and uses it, and yes the large model, I don't know if she just moved here and doesn't have internet yet or what, but she has it in a suitcase with rollers and brings it in and sits there and works all day.

The price of the machine depends on the spec. I don't see why they would use the same CPUs as the notebooks because inside a slim tablet, they will get too hot and they won't use what's in the Air because it would be too expensive. If it's not slim, it will be too heavy.
This means either Nvidia's Ion or Intel's Atom with Intel graphics. The Lenovo S12 is $499 with this spec - single 1.6GHz CPU with a 9400M and 2GB Ram. The 1.6GHz CPU will perform around the same as a 1.2GHz Celeron but if Apple get their OpenCL offloading more to the 9400M, it shouldn't be a problem and they can use a dual core Atom. The Atom CPUs are about $200 less than the lowest Core 2, even the Core 2 Solo.
I think they should use a 12" display at 1280x 800 and aim to hit the $699 price point. A 10" would be ok as long as the resolution was at least 1280 x 800.
I had a very interesting conversation with an Apple security specialist this morning.
I had my itunes account broken into, and two $50 gift certificates were bought. I got all of that straightened out through Apple's IM service a week ago, though they said a security specialist in fraud will contact me.
He did so this morning.
In the course of discussion, and checking our accounts, I mentioned that my daughter in England used a Toshiba netbook. He said that he could see that she had a Windows machine. I said that she only wanted something light for internet, Skype, IM and such, as well as being able to use iTunes for her iPhone.
Then he asked me if I knew that Apple was coming out with a small machine for primarily net use. I asked which device that was, and if he meant the rumored tablet. He said yes.
I asked if he meant that he knew that Apple was coming out with that, and again, he said yes.
I asked him how he knew, and he said that Apple had sent out a BLAST to employees. I said that it sounded odd that they would do that now. but he seemed convinced. He said that it was partly in response to some Dell tablet-like device that was supposed to be out, or coming out for about $399, but he agreed Apple's would cost more.
Honestly, I don't know what to make of that. I was in partial shock at his statements.
I have two long time friends at Apple. One is in software engineering management, and the other is in hardware engineering management. Sometimes, they will give me some hints of a product or service, but will never tell me directly, even though I promise I won't write about it, and they know I wouldn't. So this was a particular shock.
I've asked them, and have not gotten even a hint. Now I'll have to contact them again.
While on the one hand, I hope this guy knows, I'm not so sure he's gotten his information correct, though he insisted. He said that Apple sent the BLST out in the form of an RSS. He really did sound like he knew.

I would divide these devices- call them whatever you want- into two categories: those that fit in your pocket and can be with you 100% of the time, and those that you need to put in a bag and decide to take with you or not. And I see the pocketable devices (phones, basically) winning in the short and long run, for any use that doesn't require a fully-featured computer.

And on the off chance that web tablets are successful, in mid-2010 we'll have Google's ChromeOS running on a lot of them, almost all of which will cost under $300.

Hmm, an Apple Cintiq type tablet would be interesting. It would have to have a wider audience than "it's for artists" though. But if it was for this purpose, are you seeing it as a remote graphics tablet for your desktop Mac, or as a single device that you would install Adobe CS4 onto? The minimum system for CS4 is a G5 with 1GB RAM and 10GB of disk space, if this tablet is a low energy Atom or ARM device, is it going to be able to run CS4 (or CS5 when that comes out) well enough?
I do think a graphics tablet Mac is a good idea, maybe it would be more possible with some combination of Inkwell, Wacom drivers if they can get them as standard, and Back To My Mac remote services.
The very first thing my daughter (who is a photography major) said to me when I first told her that Apple might make a tablet, is that she would get it instead of a Wacom.
I had to explain that it was a computer and internet device and I didn't know if anyone would write software to enable that function.
But it would be great if it could be used that way. I'd like to be able to connect it to my computer and use it as a tablet that way, as well as use it that way by itself.
We'd need the proper software either way, but that would be good.
I have the 12" Cinteq, and it's good. but the connection box is a real pain. It's too difficult to move from machine to machine. Before my daughter went off to school this summer, we were sharing it, but it took 15 minutes to disconnect from my computer and connect it to hers.
If this would work with a USB connector, then that would be nice, but I'm not sure if USB 2 has enough speed even for a lower rez device.
I wish USB 3 were here already as that would do it.
