Whenever I create a new User using the Workgroup Manager I have to manually create their home directory in
/Users . I am creating Local users. (We only have this single XServe and no fancy directory services, etc.) Am I doing something wrong? I would think their home directory would be made for me. Its annoying to have to SSH in just to cp a directory.

Depending on your settings, Mac OS X Server will sometimes create the homedir when the user logs in the first time.
What about VNC? IS it safe to run on an XServe?

I used to run VNC on Server version 10.1. It wasn't on an XServe, but I don't know why the hardware would make a difference.
I guess technically using VNC opens up another way for someone to wiggle into your system - but I don't know of any particular security issues it brings up that other holes in your firewall won't bring up.
I posted the following in Apple's online discussion board for Workgroup Manager but got no replies. It's a little off topic but what the hell... [quote]I'm having some difficulties in setting up a group directory. Essentially, I've set up /Groups as an automountable share point and set a particular group to have a directory in /Groups and to have the group directory mount at startup. However, this doesn't happen and the /Groups directory on the server has zero items, even though I've set a group to have a directory in this folder. Any ideas?

Besides the OS X Server Admin app and the X Serve's Server Monitor apps, can I use Apple Remote Desktop with an XServe?

Apple Remote Desktop works fine but you can do everything with the server apps pretty much.

Interesting... I'll try that out.
