Am I the first to notice <a href="http://www.apple.com/macosx/x11/"; target="_blank">this</a>? Apple now has its own version of X11.

    I noticed too. Wicked, man! Hopefully it has accelerated graphics (unlike xfree86). I'll be downloading it shortly...



    edit: ooh! ooh! After reading that page I see the graphics ARE accelerated. Other goodies too. Yay!

    I'll be interested to hear you experiances with installing this, any speed improvements over the other version?

    Can you still use fink with this?

    Downloading it now.... Will it allow you to use Linux programs?

    It's much faster than XDarwin with Oroborus. Opens instantly and has the genie effect. Very nice. MacFilmGIMP is actually usable.



    The one problem I have: how do I get MacFilmGimp to open with X11 (like it did with oroborus) and not xdarwin, as it is doing when I open it from the dock? It opens fine with X11 only when I have already started X11.

    You can use them now. You just need one compiled for Dawin and X11.





    Or did you mean "Linux" as in Red Hat on an X86 PeeCee?

    Well I mean X11 apps like DCGUI, XMMS, and XINE. I've tried to compile em but I'm missing too many libraries... Would KDE/GNOME or both work with this?

    Hmmm... The installer said it installed successfully, but there is no app to be found. I tried the installer again.... still no app.



    Any ideas?

    Its in the Applications folder... Do a FIND if you cant find it... I have it but I havent sucessfully installed an X11 aps yet... I wanna try and get XINE to work.

    Here's an update:



    I "kinda" got it working. The problem was with Apple's download. The first time I downloaded I got the file "X11SDKForMacOSX.pkg" which was 3.9 MB. After I posted this, I tried to download again and got "X11UserForMacOSX.mpkg" which was 41.5 MB. This file did give me the app. (I did a search... it wasn't there before).



    But there's still a problem. There is no "window". See my screenshot.

    What is this exactly? Is it Apple's version of XDarwin? I have xfree86 installed and currently use XDarwin, would I just have to install this Apple thing and double click it to work?

    That's because you need to start an X11 app to actually see anything.

    No.... If you look at my <a href="http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~waldmire/shot.tiff"; target="_blank">screenshot</a> you will see that I have an xterm open. I have also tried opening Mozilla and the Gimp. The same thing happens.

    Go to fink.sourceforge.net ... if you are using fink there are some packages you have to uninstall and stuff. I dunno about uninstalling Xdarwin though ... seems like some people have just installed over it, but I'm unsure if that will cause problems or not.

    I downloaded X11 and I'm in the process of downloading OpenOffice. In the meantime (it's going to take a while) I decided to download the Lynx text browser. Well, there was no documentation provided, just an installer. Then nothing. How do I use Lynx? The developer site was no help, it seemed as if it was geared entirely towards people who already know everything, without anything for people who know nothing.

    lynx is a text-based console browser. i wouldn't recommend it for general browsing [it lacks many of the enhancements of modern browsers, like pictures]. i usually use it only when apps come with html docs. but, to use lynx, do:

    [code]lynx "http://www.websitename.com/"</pre><hr></blockquote>;

    the quotes around the site name are only necessary if special characters are in the name.

    Ah, I just kinda wanted to see what it's like, for fun. I am guessing it's a bit like WannaBe?



    BTW, when I type in any address, it says "Lynx: command not found."
