Another take: Steve Jobs appearance not expected Sept. 9

Wall Street analysts are divided on whether Apple co-founder Steve Jobs will appear at next week's iPod-centric event, as another firm has said his presence would be a "welcome surprise," but is not anticipated.

Analyst Shaw Wu with Kaufman Bros. released a note to investors Tuesday morning in which he predicted that Jobs will not personally unveil new iPods. That's a different take than the one sent out only hours before by Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray, who said he believes that a keynote from Jobs would be the biggest news of Sept. 9. Wu, however, believes the keynote will be delivered by Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

"It is not clear that Steve Jobs will be present," Wu said, "but most would welcome his appearance as a positive surprise."

Wu and Munster agree on most everything else, though. New iPods are a given this point, and are expected to be equipped with cameras. Wu also believes that a new version of iTunes with social media capabilities will be unveiled.

The analyst also does not expect an appearance of Apple's upcoming tablet device, expected to arrive in early 2010. Following up on a report from last month that Apple was exploring touchscreen devices of 4 inches to 12 inches in size, Wu said any tablet and/or sub-notebook devices won't be announced until next year.

Wu does predict that the iPod refresh will include more storage for devices with lower price points. He has maintained his "outperform" rating for AAPL stock, with a price target of $184.

"It will be interesting what storage capacities and price points Apple decides to set for these new iPods," he said. "Most recently, Microsoft announced a new Zune HD with 16GB of storage for $220 compared to Apple's current 8GB iPod touch for $229."

Steve won't be there. He still looks frail and won't want to become the story.

I don't expect him to make a appearance.

Apple needs to make it's transition to a new leader, unfortunately no one is nearly as qualified.

So it looks like we will still have him in charge, but a reduced capacity, for as long as possible.

I wish it could be forever, and I wish he has enough time to realize all his dreams to influence the future of computing and not get cut short like Walt Disney did (EPCOT).

Keep up the good fight Steve and thanks for bringing back the 15" matte screen MacBook Pro!

There's no reason for Job's to show up for an insignificant iPod event. He's not going to show up until the tablet comes out. And frankly, after the way the media treated him during his absence, I don't blame him.

Actually his hologram will be there, repeating his favorite mantra, "Help us Steve Ballmer, you're our only hope!"

Maybe he'll do a live feed or a pre-recorded video.

I know being frail like that means you get tired very easily, but even a pre-recorded video for everyone wouldn't be THAT strenuous.

Perhaps he's so frail, he's been ordered to stay out of public view so people don't think he's about to die and start pulling out.

And we look forward to the upcoming 13" matte screen MacBook Pros and new matte screen iMacs! Thank you Steve!

He would only be there if Paul McCartney was going to be there.

From here on out we're only going to see him for blockbuster events. Like when the tablet is ready. Introducing new iPods has become little more than an earnings call. It's not that exciting. Add a camera, add some more buttons to iTunes. It's not Steve-worthy.

Same with the Macbooks. I think they're running out of stuff to add. Unibody. SD slot. Look at Snow Leopard. They're all great things but they're not the leaps that drove the switcher stampede.

This stuff is starting to plateau in terms of feature saturation. No, I'm not the guy who thinks everything has been invented. But in terms of catalysts to drive big-time growth of this stock I'm starting to wonder.

For the first time I'm starting to consider selling.

I think Apple would be fine if he just stayed behind the curtain. It would be more in line with his desires to keep his life private. Being a publicity monger and then being offended if people asks private questions might be considered contradictory. It usually doesn't work that way.

They are fine without Jobs, actually. I wonder if they will do better with Jobs though..

But they really aren't without Jobs, he can run the company without having to do the presentations.

The note about price and capacity is vapid, even for an analyst.

The only thing that would be interesting is if Apple introduces something other than an iPod touch with 3GS-class internals starting at $229 for 16GB.

For Sj to front any presentation now would be a mistake and a step back. Apple has definitely moved on and will (need to) be the better for it. Were the Fab Four to be announced on iTunes, however, and were Macca and Ringo to appear, it wouldn't be out of order for SJ to make an appearance with them, I guess. I don't think it'll happen, but that is really the only scenario I can imagine where SJ would appear on stage. Even when the tablet is introduced I can't see it happening.

Just buy the CD, rip it, and pass on the love.

By the way, does the estate of King of Pop get any cut off the sale of these CDs?

I don't think the tablet will be shown until the day its ready to sell.

Apple doesn't generally preview product. The only reason they showed the iPhone early was that it needed to go through 6 months of FCC approvals, so the cat was out of the bag anyway. (50 bonus points to anyone who can correlate that phrase to 'buying a pig in a poke' without looking it up.)

There's no value to Apple in showing their hand without being able to start the money machine immediately rolling.
