OK, so I have Safari 4 on my SL Mackbook Pro. How do I configure Safari so when I click on a .DOC or .PTT or some kind of file on the internet, I want to only VIEW it, and NOT download it into my DOWNLOADS folder.

Please someone help me.

Thank you

You could turn on Private Browsing (Safari Menu). That will delete the downloaded file automagically. Be sure to read the warning before you decide to do it. I've never tried it, in fact, just found it a minute ago. Maybe it's possible to just turn it on for viewing the pics, then turn it off.

I believe Private Browsing is more for preventing others from seeing where you are going on the web and what you are downloading. Most items will require you to download the data or file to view it. If it is something you don't want in your download folder, click on the download folder and drag the file to the trash. Then empty the trash

Afaik .DOC or .PTT files, or really any files, need to be downloaded to be viewed.

With Google's plans for 'cloud computing' it will be different (if it catches on...): both the app and the file will 'live' in the cloud. Not on your machine. Theoretically you wouldn't need an internal harddisk anymore. Or not a big one anyway.

I don't think Microsoft embeds Powerpoint viewer into IE. It downloads and plays it. Same behavior as Safari.

Yes. I'm just saying it will be deleted without the user having to do it. But then, the user has to turn PB on and off...

If you decide to switch to Firefox (getfirefox.com), the Google Toolbar for Firefox allows you to open files with Google Docs without ever downloading them to your computer. This is kind of what Rokcet Scientist was describing.

Here's a cloud computing hype dissected:

Google Apps Not the DC Success Many Believe?

    Monday September 07, 2009

Google touts its partnership with the District of Columbia government, presenting it as quite the Google Apps success story. So as part of his coverage of last week's Gmail outage, nextgov's Gautham Nagesh called the DC government, but was told they hadn't heard of any reports of outages among city employees. Nagesh wrote this off to safeguards put in place for the government by Google, but readers tipped him off to another explanation: 'Despite all the press releases trumpeting Google in DC,' an anonymous commenter wrote, 'Exchange is still the city's primary email system.' Nagesh followed up, and was surprised to learn that there is indeed no Gmail in DC government. This all seemed rather strange to Nagesh, considering how much attention former DC CTO and current Federal CIO Vivek Kundra has received for implementing Google Apps for District employees.

Reporting separately, CNET's Elinor Mills was told by a DC spokeswoman that while Google Apps is available to 38,000 DC city employees, only 4,000 are actively using it. The spokeswoman added that Gmail could potentially replace Microsoft Exchange, 'but this decision has not been made yet.'

You may want to try out Hazel. It's a little utility that can clean up and organize your files & folders based on your rules

    http://www.noodlesoft.com/hazel.php

It's got a lot of nice uses but for your case you could set up a rule that says if a doc or ppt is downloaded after say 5 minutes delete it

And what do you do when you've set that up and downloaded a .doc or .ppt that you do not want deleted?
