True. Apple has been doing a lot of price drops this year.

This is going to be a very boring event if all there is are new iPods w/cameras.

Then you should expect to be bored.

Some of us will not be.

I can't imagine why you'd buy a 16gb touch when the 32gb is only $30 more. They should probably just discontinue the 16gb model.

These new price differentials are asinine.

    $60 difference between 8 and 16 gb yet only $30 between 16 and 32Gb.

Makes you think what these are really worth and how much Apple has overpriced them to begin with.

May Microsoft continue to get Apple to drop prices. The consumer wins hands down everytime there is competition.

Fanboys would watch paint dry at an Apple event and think it mind blowing.

Still holding out hope that they'll make a Touch with a HDD.

Flash storage for apps, pics, etc; HDD for gobs and gobs of music and movies.

And these price cuts are weird. If it's to shift inventory, wouldn't they have done it before they announced the updated version is definitely around the corner? Particularly if the updated touch is carrying a 3.2mp video camera.

Looks like a slick attempt to pre-empt any MS Zune talking points regarding pricing. May all the prices continue to drop- it only benefits the consumer.

They had to wait until after the back-to-school promotion - otherwise it wouldn't look like you were getting a great deal on savings.

In addition, the 16GB iPod touch dropped from $299 to $249 and the 8GB model fell from $229 to $189. On the iPod nano side, the 16GB capacity decreased to $149 (from $189), and the 8GB offering slid to $129 (from $149). Finally, the iPod classic had its price cut to $229 (from $249).

With these new "clearance" prices on the year-old iPod models, we now know the minimum possible price for the new iPods (excepting the shuffle). The new ones will very likely cost more if these current models remain and coexist in the lineup for awhile. So say goodbye to the rumored $99 nano, or $149 touch. While the rumored $299/$399 for the 32/64GB iPod touch looks very likely, the rumored $199 for the 16GB model is impossible if the old 16GB one is still $249.

It's looking like we're going to be underwhelmed by the pricing. The feature set had better be bumped up significantly to compensate.

The 16GB model looks mispriced. It should be $209-219 or at most $229. Maybe Apple has a ton of 32GB units in inventory, and very few 16GB units.

    Happy waiting then!

The new 32Gb price does make it look like a 64GB model is likely now at $399. The pricing structure of only a $30 difference between the 16GB and 32GB Touch is a bit unusual, but there are many reasons as to why.

And of course, in your typical fashion, you would post not but one.

The main reason the Touch is the size it is is because that's the optimal size for a smart phone. But if you were developing a browser/ebook reader/portable gaming platform, which is what the Touch has morphed into, you would be looking for more screen real estate.

Consider that the average wallet is about an inch wider than a Touch, i.e. pockets can accommodate a bigger Touch. What's not to like about a pocketable version of the Touch with a more enjoyable to use screen size if, in fact, the price point would be similar to what the existing Touch had sold for prior to today?

I think that projecting that a 10" tablet would be the next step in the iPod's development has been effective at confusing a lot of observers.

I would by no means be surprised if the Touch + failed to materialize today. On the other hand, this drop in the price of existing Touch models suggests Apple is up to something bigger than many are anticipating.

I?ve tried hand holding with you to get you to understand the basics of common sense, logic, and even business practices. The truth is that most people don?t need to be spoon fed the potential reasons and you won?t understand them if they were explained, so what is the point of stating points that are obvious to everyone else but you?

A poor excuse for a lame posting. No one else would make that kind of statement without listing a couple of examples except for yourself. The fact is that your points are probably illogical anyway so please spare us for them.

This makes perfect sense if reports of production problems are true. Who would buy an iPod at full price today knowing that a much better iPod is going to be available in a month or so? If it's also true that the entire iPod line has been discontinued, as some retailers have reported, this also supports the notion that there is a production delay.

I really don't see Apple keeping the current lineup and adding all-new models. It would be very un-Apple to sell a fancy new iPod touch with a camera (and maybe the processor from the 3GS?) for $20 more than an otherwise identical iPod without one.
