How to make files invisible?

I want to be able to make a folder or file on the desktop invisible but still take up space. The reason for this is I'm designing my desktop with dragthing and i want the icons on the left side of the desktop to start 2 icon spaces down, I dont have my HD on the desktop as an icon, i have it in a transparent (with 100% backround transparency) dragthing dock. So it would be cool if i could put two invisible folders there that would take up space and keep the other icons lower when I sort by name. Any sugestions? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

    just prefix the file/folder name with a period '.' and that should do the trick.

    well i know that, i want to know if i can make the file or folder invisible (name included) but other icons will still respect its space. Sorry if i wasn't clear. I guess this does belong in gb though.

    Something I found out looking at my iPod...



    If you want to make a file invisible, but not change its name to something with a "." in front of it, you can create an invisible file called ".hidden" in the same directory, and list the name or names of any files that you wish to be invisible in the .hidden file.
