Fist off, you can't use Airport exteme with anything other than the new PowerMacs/Books. However, it is backward compatible with the original Airport used in iBooks and will work at 11mbps. As for OS X, you can "upgrade" in the sense that you can install OS X on top of OS 9. However, this really isn't recommended. What you should do is completely initialize your hard drive and install OS X on its own.

I've never initialized my hard drives before any OS install, including when I originally installed OS X and I've had no trouble.

Only the brand new 12" and 17" powerbook, and 17" iMac (i think), and new Powermacs can take advantage of the 56 Mb/s of airport extreme. You can still us the new airport extreme base stations, but only at 11 MB/s with your clamshell.

You should try using Jaguar (OS 10.2.4) on your clamsell. Its quite useable. I used to use my blueberry 300 mhz all the time untill i got a new iMac (actually, I'm typing on it now  ). Unless you've got applications that don't run in OS X, give it a try.

I bought the airport extreme to use as a home network and want to connect my windows pc as well as the ibook. It is the ibook that I am having issues with at this time.

I am new to mac and want to do what is simple. I have no os9 experience so losing it is not an issue for me. Can I use the disk that came with my new powerbook on the ibook? If so can I get the os10 user license for the ibook or will I have to buy the $129 disk from apple?

    thanks

ps I have been using the 12" powerbook (MY 1ST APPLE)for 3 days . I believe I am getting the hang of this thing pretty fast and................. I like it!

an iBook 366 (Clamshell) can use an Airport extreme Basestation, however the iBook itself must use an original Airport card. The iBook will operate at the lower speed, but it sill work. In terms of OS version, The original Airport software works in both OS 9 and OS X. So, if you install os 9 on the iBook you will be able to use the airport extreme basestation. In addition a windows machine will work with the Airport extreme with the use of a usb adapter or PCI card. If you want the windows pc to operate at 54mbs (Airport Extreme speed) it must be an 802.11g device. Or of course you can use the second ethernet port for a wired connection. I don't think you will be able to use the "CD" included with the Powerbook. First off, I think it is a DVD as Apple has been including the System software/restore on DVD on recent machines, and an iBook 366 cannot read DVD-ROM. You may be able to extract the Packages from the DVD and burn it is a bootable CD (using the program BOOTCD, available at versiontracker.com). I am not sure exactly how to do this, so perhaps someone else could comment on whether or not this is possible and/or how to do it?

I left out the part about going to the apple store to ask about this issue. The guy at the genius bar checked out system requierments and it seems that os9 will not support extreme so I need to install os 10 on the ibook.

    thanks

so the guy said that the original aiport under Mac OS 9 will not work with an Aiport extreme base station? I'm not sure if that is accurate.

OS X does not substitute OS 9 in that they can coexist on one and the same partition. I have both installed. If you have one of the latest Macs you cannot boot it in OS 9, but you can still use it from within OS X. It's called Classic in OS X. The real issue is software because some apps require OS X, some work only in Classic and some work both in OS X and Classic.
