You mean people still use the desktop, I mean, more than as a picture frame?

I do. I got lots of docs that i think i might use, or am currently using. Sortta like a misc. items folder. It's much easier than opening a finder window and clicking a few times to get there. No more aliases though, those belong in the doc.
Just teasing (shoulda used mr winkey: ). That's what my Desktop is used for, but I've become quite a neatnick with it. I move stuff off of it as soon as I've done shuffling stuff around, and I don't even have CDs or the hard drive on the desktop.

Ha, being neat with the desktop. What an idea. Its about the only thing I have complete control of in my house. Sucks, 3 more years till college. Then I can keep things in "orderly chaos".
What if all your virtual desktops were on a Cube. You could have a small floating cube on your screen.

You know that's really interesting, because in Jurassic Park (the original novel, not the movie), Lex (the bratty hacker girl character) deals with the same type of computer interface that you're thinking of. (Icons on a floating cube.)
You know, this isn't a new idea...honest...I just can't remember where I've seen the multiple-screens-on-cube" paradigm the first time.
Anyway, that was like, three or more years ago. You may have just thought of it recently, but its been done before...as they say "great minds think alike".
I'd sure give it a tryout. I think that having a single desktop is a good limit for ME, as it helps to remind me to clean up and organize my data every six month or so. Things might get a little nicer when I can target downloads in Safari

Well, the first time *I* saw it was 1996 when a friend of mine said "Look what I did this weekend on the SGI!" She soon thereafter went to Pixar.

Maybe Michael Crichton used BeOS once?
