App Needed: Simple Beer Label Design

My first batch of home brew is going to be ready for bottling in late-November. I have a sketch of a simple label I want to make and month to figure out how to do it. What application would someone use to do this? I?ll have additional batches to do in the future, and would love to be able to do other things like design headers for a blog, invites, etc so I am not adverse to buying something. What should I look at? I could get an academic discount on Photoshop or try something like Pixilmator ? but is that the way to go?

I'd say try every graphics editor you can lay your hands on and see what works best for you. Graphics pros would probably use Illustrator.

Most important is to know before you start what kind of file you would want/need the end result to be. Is it for printing on your own printer? Or for sending to a pro label print shop?

The output is pretty simple - JPEG or GIF, 3.75 by 4.25 with a 1/4 inch bleed. I want to keep it simple. I can get an academic discount on photoshop, and I have toyed with pixelmator - and am confident with some work I could figure them out. What else is out there?

Academic discount on Photoshop CS4 is the way to go. Then there are a lot of Photoshop tutorials on the web. Once you get Photoshop, search for tutorials from the web and you'll be able to adapt them for your design. There are some particularly good "text" and "signage" kind of tutorials out there that make type (words) look really cool.
